Of course John Lennon's important. He touched and inspired a hell of lot of people in a lot of ways that go far beyond just voicing his opinions. He's not just another celebrity.

His LIFE certainly wasn't more important that anyone else's, though...So, in that respect, I really wouldn't rank Mark David Chapman as worse than any other cold-blooded killer.

If we were talking about Sirhan Sirhan, on the other hand...

The world cried because they loved John Lennon. The reason they loved him is irrelevent.

Also, and I could be wrong here in Lennon's case specifically, but back then a lot of the English rockers would move to other countries during tax exiles to keep their government from taxing them so highly. If that's not why Lennon came here, then I stand corrected, but it's possible. I believe the Stones did it, as did the members of Led Zeppelin.

And was Lennon ever granted citizenship here? Because if not, then the random scrub's opinion DOES mean more than his did. Sorry, if you're not a citizen here, or you are one and not registered to vote, you really have no right to complain in my opinion.

John was granted a green card for permanent residence on July 27, 1976.

I agree with Lynch. JL was no more important than anyone else on this board, or their children, or.. If a person got something from Lennon and his message then great, but that doesn't make his death any more tragic than the poor guy in a wheelchair that got sliced and diced by a nutbag with an axe back in my hometown. Both people had lives that mattered equally to me.

I disagree. I think saying everyone is equally "important" is just a line people say to themselves to make themselves feel less irrelevant. What you do in life defines ho you are and what you're worth. If a random, generic man does nothing with his life but grow up healthy and drug free, gets married and has kids he loves and raises right, his life is more meaningful and important because he made people happy. Joe Everyman touched his family and people in his life in a positive way. John Lennon touched millions of people in a way people can only dream of, hes more important than me because of that fact. He did something positive with his life and make people happy. He made people want to live, made peoples lives just the tiniest bit better. Just because one was famous and one wasnt is irrelevant. Its what you do with the time you have, and he made an impact. whether it be a large impact on one or a small impact on one, importance is measured by what you accomplish and the impact it has. In that aspect, john lennon is among the most important people ever.

I would be too afraid of him to say anything....Chapman was nutz!

I wouldn't be afraid of him, but I might be tempted to pick him up and put him headfirst through the nearest wall.:D

i'll be honest, i'd hit him!

yeah, lennon fought for a very long time to get his green card. he had a minor cannabis conviction previously in england and that was the reason it was hard for him to get his card.

he didn't move to the states for tax reasons, he simply loved new york. he could walk down the street, go into cafes, etc, without people hassling him, thats one reason he lived there.

I'm sorry but I find that to be completely ridiculous. We are all on the same level as human beings and one persons untimely death is just as heart wrenching as the next and no, no one here is underestimating his impact but as I said before his murderer is on the same level as the rest of those he shares a cell block with. I can think of people who have committed far more serious crimes and devastated lives if you want to go that route. You turned a simple statement about him not being worse than any other murderer into a JL praise-a-thon and I don't really get it.
