"Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends"

Hotel California - The Eagles

Cut and paste gone horribly wrong or is that the actual spelling?

I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

The opening lines of 21st Century Schizoid Man by Pete Sinfield. It is completely meaningless twaddle, but it works for me. I am not particularly concerned with deep and meaningful lyrics, because I do not really listen to them:

Cat's foot iron claw
Neuro-surgeons scream for more
At paranoia's poison door.
Twenty first century schizoid man.

One of my all-time favourite lyrics by Alan Hull for Lindisfarne's first single, Lady Eleanor, which initially failed to chart. After the success of Meet Me On the Corner, it was rereleased and sold quite well. Apparently, it is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, which means little to me. Crowded House have cited the song as one of their main influences.

Lady Eleanor by Lindisfarne

Banshee playing magician sitting lotus on the floor
Belly dancing beauty with a power driven saw
Had my share of nightmares, didn't think there could be much more
then in walked Rodrick Usher with the Lady Eleanor . . .

. . . But it's all right, Lady Eleanor
All right, Lady Eleanor
I'm all right where I am

Lyrics don't have to be deep and meaningful to be good. Sometimes a good, old story is very entertaining.

"Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one"

The House of the Rising Sun - The Animals

Always thought this was a cool way of wording a description of someone....

Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson - Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys

(~ the 1:29 mark)
Them that don't know him
won't like him
and them that do
sometimes don't know how to take him

he ain't wrong he's just different
but his pride won't let him
do things to make you think he's right

You're right Jake, a story can work well. I was going to post Jack Clement's Ballad of a Teenage Queen earlier, but the thread is meant for quotes and it needs the whole song. However, with the mention of a story, I've changed my mind. When you read Teenage Queen on paper it seems overly sentimental, but Johnny Cash managed to add a feel and atmosphere which creates a moving paean to a childhood sweetheart. It also ties in with Lynch's mention of the Outlaws.

"Ballad Of A Teenage Queen"

(Dream on, dream on teenage queen prettiest girl we've ever seen)

There's a story in our town
Of the prettiest girl around
Golden hair and eyes of blue
How those eyes could flash at you (How those eyes could flash at you)
Boys hung 'round her by the score
But she loved the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen prettiest girl we've ever seen)

She was tops in all they said
It never once went to her head
She had everything it seems
Not a care, this teenage queen (Not a care, this teenage queen)
Other boys could offer more
But she loved the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen you should be a movie queen)

He would marry her next spring
Saved his money, bought a ring
Then one day a movie scout
Came to town to take her out (Came to town to take her out)
Hollywood could offer more
So she left the boy next door working at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen see you on the movie screen)

Very soon she was a star
Pretty house and shiny car
Swimming pool and a fence around
But she missed her old home town (But she missed her old home town)
All the world was at her door
All except the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen saddest girl we've ever seen)

Then one day the teenage star
Sold her house and all her cars
Gave up all her wealth and fame
Left it all and caught a train (Left it all and caught a train)
Do I have to tell you more
She came back to the boy next door who worked at the candy store

(Now this story has some more, you'll hear it all at the candy store)
