No real opinion about Fleetwood Mac to be honest. I still occasionally listen to the Peter Green/Danny Kirwan/Jeremy Spencer version of the band from the 1968-70 era but as good as they were they were a bit to 'pure blues' for my liking and the Christine McVie/Bob Welch version of the band from the early 1970s wasn't that interesting and as for the Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks era they were to mainstream pop/rock for my taste so all in all Fleetwood Mac are one of those bands that doesn't interest me.

I think what's upsetting to FM fans who care about LB is that he was fired, as opposed to saying, hey you know what? I'm not interested in this tour so I Will Go My Own Way and you guys carry on, best of luck on the tour. It seems acrimonious that Lindsey is tossed out. His talent and contributions to FM during his tenures is what it is, and IMHO, irreplaceable. Sure FM can continue but if fans of the Buckingham/Nicks incarnations of the band (such as me) are upset, I don't think that's wrong to feel that way.

I'm wondering if the "new" FM is going to include in their playlists any of the songs Lindsey Buckingham wrote for the band. Are they going to completely cut him out of their history now that they've FIRED him, or are they going to be gauche and have someone else sing "Big Love" (for instance)?

ETA: I really want to know. I'm not trying to be snarky.

What did they do when Lindsey quit ahead of the Tango tour in 1987? Did Rick and Billy do his songs?

I am a Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac fan first and foremost, but Buckingham Nicks (and Perfect) recreated the band with strength.

Bob Welch kept the group going and without him there would probably not have been a Buckingham Nicks version of the band. His reward was a kick in the teeth. It had been similar for Danny Kirwan, and the same for Kirby, Gantry and Martinez (so it is not strictly true they were forgotten in the UK, although Welsh later shifted them to LA).

I did like the later version with Billy Burnette and Rick Vito, as they made a good job of playing the Peter Green material live again. It is a pity that they did not persist with these two musicians together. I would be interested to know if Burnette and Vito ever collaborated again.

If that really is the case then I applaud Stevie Nicks.

Guitarist Mike Campbell Releases Statement on Joining Fleetwood Mac
    [IMG]
    Pamela Littky

Following the news that Fleetwood Mac would tour without longtime guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, new enlistee Mike Campbell has issued a statement elaborating on his new role in the band.

“Lindsey is one of my favorite musical artists. A true genius at songwriting and guitar playing,” Campbell wrote. “I intend to honor his songs while at the same time bring my musicality to the band.”

The news of Buckingham’s departure broke on April 9. Soon after, the band confirmed that the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers guitarist, along with Crowded House’s Neil Finn, will take over Buckingham’s duties.

Rolling Stone rock critic Rob Sheffield described Buckingham’s sudden departure as “the most quintessential Fleetwood Mac move they’ve ever made.”

See below for Campbell’s full statement on joining Fleetwood Mac below.

Though I was sad to hear Lindsey Buckingham is no longer with Fleetwood Mac, I am honored and excited to join the band. Lindsey is one of my favorite musical artists. A true genius at songwriting and guitar playing. I intend to honor his songs while at the same time bring my musicality to the band. After one rehearsal I can tell it’s going to be an amazing collaboration. I am also very happy to have an opportunity to play with Neil Finn, who I greatly admire. Fleetwood Mac not only has one of the greatest rhythm sections in rock history, it also has two of the finest voices and songwriters in Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie. I am looking forward to the tour with great anticipation.
