Re: Katy Perry: my pop music girl crush

The bass player in one of my bands is a big fan :)

Bewareofthebassplayer-2.jpg

* Sorry ILJP.. I just had to*

I'm in that majority that pulls a No Thanks to most of the pop musicians because I feel their stuff is over running any chance of some good rock bands getting any recognition.
Things in the music world have changed so much to cater to the young generation EVEN though older folks like her music.. But I think you know what I'm getting at.. NOT a hater here.. I'm sure she is a delight to alot of people.. I'm happy to miss out just for the sake of boycotting the music industry's crappy idea of what is more important.. Making tons of money and side stepping a whole other world of qualified musicians..:peek

Nice thread Jen, not a fan myself for reasons Slip already posted.

Isn't she splitting from her new husband...Russell Brand I think his name is? Never liked him and I think she can do Much better for herself.;)

Re: Katy Perry: my pop music girl crush

I think Katy is a very attractive woman..........and that is as far as my admiration for her goes.

What saddens me about Katy, is the fact the girl can play the piano (infact, she is really good on the piano) but the only side of her we see is the pop princess singing sensation. I would have much more respect for her if she wasn't cashing in on her good looks!!

Baaaaaaack.

I'm not too hot (n cold) on her first album really. Couple songs I like, is all, Waking Up In Vegas is awesome. But Teenage Dream I'd rank as probably the best pop album I've ever heard. Like omfg skjdjaskdjkaj it's incredible.

In addition to E.T., my favorites are two of the album cuts:

I mean, like, come on. If those songs aren't freaking cool I don't know what is. Katy Perry is an artist that can be as catchy as Ke$ha or Gaga and at the same time sound as far out and hip as Imogen Heap.

I'd also have to rank the show I saw of hers as possibly the second best show I ever saw. The stage show was incredible, with trippy as heck video clips and all kinds of bizarre props, dancing meat, gum drop men... Reminded me of Rust Never Sleeps more than anything. She played every single song of hers I like. Plus she threw in some incredible covers. Including this little gem of an unplugged medley....

All I can say is I pray it's not another three years before she puts out her next album. I mean, I can understand why it took so long, considering they were putting together one of the most incredible albums. But I'm just too excited to see what direction her music goes in next. I'm kind of sad the deluxe edition of Teenage Dream didn't even have one new song on it, just a few remixes is all. To me Teenage Dream is one of those special, perfect albums, like Exile or Darkside or something, where I just don't even care, I want to hear anything from those sessions because it's bound to be superb.

To each their own, more power to you. But I couldn't care less if she plays piano or anything. That's never been what music is about to me at all. All of my favorite artists barely play their instruments in the first place, Neil, Nirvana, Roger, Varg, Dylan even. I think every genre has its own different attributes that make it great, and while I want my rock artists to play the guitar, I don't think that has anything to do with what makes pop music great. Same way I wouldn't bag on Neil Young for not having a hit single. Different formats for different genres, I say.

Re: Katy Perry: my pop music girl crush

One thing that disappointed me was the "E.T." version on the album doesn't have Kanye on it. :wtf: E.T. BTW sounds like something T.A.T.U could of sang if anyone remembers them.

I remember t.A.T.u and not just for "All The Things You Said" (by the way, I love the video for that song). :D

Isn't she splitting from her new husband...Russell Brand I think his name is? Never liked him and I think she can do Much better for herself.;)

I don't know if they're getting a divorce but I wouldn't be surprised since Russell is kind a well known ladies man (though I'm not so sure if he is a adulterer). All the same, I've always liked him. He's a funny guy. :D

Now for the thread! I think it'd be safe to say that Katy Perry is the biggest woman in pop right now aside from Gaga. However I can't say that I care or her music...like...at all. I've only ever heard her hits which, whether I like it or not, I have heard a lot and they have not urged me to want to listen to her deep cuts at all.

I think I'll just stick to having plastic bags in the grocery store and in American Beauty, thank you. :D

Re: Katy Perry: my pop music girl crush

I don't mind her music at all and like I said before it's quite catchy and fun, the type of thing I need to listen to when I'm not in the best of spirits which has been a lot lately. And I hope I'm not losing any credibility as a rock fan by posting a thread like this and the country one, but I like a little of everything in my musical diet and Katy is alright with me.

If someone would fault your rock cred for listening to Katy, that seems to me a rather bit more image-conscious and vain than what some people claim pop is! The further I stray, the more I'm able to appreciate rock music. The greater scope I have of music as a whole, the deeper understanding and the more beauty I can see in the specific intricate things that make rock music unique and amazing. I'm sure most would concur with these feelings for a variety of genres they've explored, bubblegum is just another!

Nobody judges on people's music tastes here, so no need to worry about that. We all like what we like, that's what makes everyone so diverse.

 Fabulous post and 100% true.

And no one here has judged, I just don't know what people are thinking when they see a Katy Perry thread by the Zeppelin chick. :heheh:

Then again, Coldplay is one of my top bands.

Probably the same thing as when they see the guy who posts a lot of melo-death metal threads post a backstreet boys thread and a new kids on the block thread.

Not really thinking much of it except that the music they like is very open minded, which is good.
