Re: Johnny Winter

I gotta admit...I'm not a big fan of ''The Progressive Blues Experiment''...

it's alright...but there's so much better, in my humble opinion...

Just my 2 cents on that....

I think I have most of Johnny Winters albums...

I'd highly recommend for anyone, Johnny's first 5 albums...

Johnny Winter (1969)
Second Winter (1969)
Johnny Winter And (1970)
Live Johnny Winter And (1971)
Still Alive and Well (1973)

The 2 CD deluxe version of ''Second Winter'' is great...you get the original studio album remastered and a live bonus disc of vintage Johnny Winter in concert from 1970...

And speaking of live albums -- were Johnny really shines....

these are great live albums...

Live Johnny Winter And (1971) (as mentioned above)
Captured Live! (1976)
Live In NYC '97 (1998)
The Woodstock Experience (1969/2009)

And gotta add in another great album, ''Third Degree'' -- this one's from 1986 and full of blues rockin' goodies!

In my opinion, these 9 albums are Essential Johnny Winter albums and a must have in my book!

Re: Johnny Winter

I'd say ''The Progressive Blues Experiment'' is one of his very best. Sox agrees I know because we talked about it before. Out of everything I own (which I listed above obviously) I'd say "Johnny Winter And" is by far the weakest. It's neither Blues nor Hard Rock and not very interesting at all ,IMO.

Edit: BTW, Johnny has two albums out before his "first 5" as listed by Groovy above and they are:

First Winter 69
The Progressive Blues Experiment 69

If it's not the best, I'm not sure if it's really all that weak. Johnny Winter And Live is a fun spin everytime IMO.

Re: Johnny Winter

DKW...I knew Johnny Winter had recording out before his first major official Columbia debut album release. Yeah, he had a few recordings out on a small independent labels before that, including ''The Progressive Blues Experiment''. I wasn't trying to put Sox and yours opinion and tastes down, I was just giving my personal opinion. As a matter of fact, it's a good album....better then alright. (probably saying alright was a blunder by me) I was very happy when they finally released ''The Progressive Blues Experiment'' on CD 6-7 years ago after not being available since the vinyl record days. Again, I was just giving my view - and in my view there aren't any bad Johnny Winter albums - and we all have our favorites!

That's from "Johnny Winter And Live" which is a really good album. I was referring to "Johnny Winter And.." a studio album. Two completely different releases.

Re: Johnny Winter

''Johnny Winter And'' is more of a rock album, and a little less bluesy than his first two major albums for Columbia. It's pretty good, imo.

But must say ''Live Johnny Winter And...'' is a excellent smokin' album.

Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer trading guitar licks is as good as it gets!

Amazing stuff...I'd put it up there with the Allman Brothers Band Live At The Fillmore East, if it was a double album. And that's pretty high praise.

''Live Johnny Winter And...'' is the first album I'd recommend to anyone wanting to get into Johnny Winter - high energy album that kicks ass!

Re: Johnny Winter

I do like the Progressive Blues Experience a lot and also, Let Me In and Hey Where's Your Brother, they are two great albums, the early stuff he did was very country and was ok but not his best. The 4 disc set I got was his early albums an they were all more country like the song, A Jack Daniels Kind Of Day, which Is a pleasant song but not his best IMHO :)
