Jess Harlen is a young musician of Maouri descent, born in New Zealand and currently residing in Melbourne. (Another Aussie steal ) She first gained exposure by winning the Best Female Vocalist and Best Acoustic Song awards for Queensland at the age of 16. After moving to Melbourne in 2005 to work on her music career, Jess released her first EP "Street Level Soul", and has since been playing and travelling around the world, as well as gaining reputation by working with Aussie roots legends Blue King Brown and playing in support of The Cat Empire in Europe, the U.S and Canada.
Her music is soulful, emotive and ethereal. She was influenced by artists from blues, soul, motown and roots music as well as native New Zealand artists. The result is an indescribable fusion of eclectic soul and acoustic pop. The music is varied yet accesible, deep and introspective in an often light hearted tone.
Jess completed and released her debut album "Neon Heartache" in March of 2010 through Obese Records:
It has become one of my favourite, most listened to albums of this year and is deserving of higher honours than it currently recieves. So without further ado, here is some of her wonderful music:
