Jess Harlen is a young musician of Maouri descent, born in New Zealand and currently residing in Melbourne. (Another Aussie steal :D) She first gained exposure by winning the Best Female Vocalist and Best Acoustic Song awards for Queensland at the age of 16. After moving to Melbourne in 2005 to work on her music career, Jess released her first EP "Street Level Soul", and has since been playing and travelling around the world, as well as gaining reputation by working with Aussie roots legends Blue King Brown and playing in support of The Cat Empire in Europe, the U.S and Canada.

Her music is soulful, emotive and ethereal. She was influenced by artists from blues, soul, motown and roots music as well as native New Zealand artists. The result is an indescribable fusion of eclectic soul and acoustic pop. The music is varied yet accesible, deep and introspective in an often light hearted tone.

Jess completed and released her debut album "Neon Heartache" in March of 2010 through Obese Records:

It has become one of my favourite, most listened to albums of this year and is deserving of higher honours than it currently recieves. So without further ado, here is some of her wonderful music:

The singles:

I Go

Watch the Water

The only other videos I can find:

Re: Jess Harlen

I knew this name looked familiar. Astrid posted one of her videos in the Thirst last round that I really liked. I'll look into these other videos once I get the change to. She seems really fun. :)

Ah yes, that's right. I remember the music video for that pick. Lots of face paint and stuff if I recall correctly.

Hey Folks :grinthumb

I was breezing through and caught Jess' name and I popped in to see the deal :)

I hadn't realized my Jess was the same as your Jess Harlen Sal ! And I was pleased to see she was so versatile ! I love her very soulful voice..I hear the Motown influences ,which appeals to me alot.

Thanks for sharing her story Sal..I'm going to look for more music by her :grinthumb

If you get a chance to listen to "Diamond", (Actually I might see if I can upload it) it's completely different to both of our MT songs. It's a lot more gritty and bluesy then anything else on the album :grinthumb
