Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra Reveal Details of New ‘All Alone in the Universe’ LP, Release New Single ‘When I Was a Boy’

Jeff Lynne‘s Electric Light Orchestra is back with a new album — and it’ll be out in time for Christmas.

Lynne’s label, Columbia Records, has announced a Nov. 13 release for the new LP, which is titled All Alone in the Universe and marks Lynne’s first studio outing under the ELO banner since 2001′s Zoom. The set is preceded by a single, “When I Was a Boy,” which you can hear below; the song will be available as an instant download for fans who pre-order the album via Amazon or iTunes starting Sept. 25.

“Jeff Lynne is a total master of his craft and Alone in the Universe is pure pop perfection,” enthused Columbia president Ashley Newton. “We are thrilled to be involved in the return of ELO and enormously proud to be releasing this contemporary classic on Columbia Records.”

For Lynne, who confirmed progress on a new ELO record last fall while expressing an eagerness to take the current version of the band on the road, Alone in the Universe simply serves as his latest attempt to stay in tune with the muse that’s helped fuel his decades of multi-platinum success.

“Music is such a powerful force in our lives,” he added in the album press release. “A good song can make people feel much less alone in this universe. And trying to create one of those songs somehow makes me feel less alone too. My whole life — from being that kid with a dream in Birmingham right until today — proves how much music can do.”

Awesome present! He sounds super. I think ELO is only second to the Beatles. Pure genius. :grinthumb

I hope they do tour and they come to Chicago! :D

You can spot a truly great song-writer before the first verse is even half-way over, thing with Lynne is that it just keeps getting even better for the next 3-4 minutes!

Jeff Lynne Says 2014 Hyde Park Show Let Him ‘Feel the Love’ That Inspired New ELO Album

If you’re excited about Jeff Lynne recording under the Electric Light Orchestra banner again, you can thank the folks who turned out for the band’s 2014 appearance at Hyde Park in London.

Classic Rock Magazine reports that Lynne previewed the new ELO LP, the recently announced All Alone in the Universe, at an invitation-only soiree held at a London hotel yesterday. At a Q&A session held after the playback, he recalled being inspired by the rush of affection he felt onstage.

“It just blew me away,” he admitted, joking that he “didn’t know anybody would be left” in the festival crowd when he started his set. “It was magnificent. I couldn’t believe it. They knew all the words. I knew most of them, although not necessarily in that order.”

Getting that outpouring of fan feedback started the 18-month journey that led to All Alone in the Universe. “It was absolutely astonishing, and so thrilling,” added Lynne. “It was beyond anything I could have imagined. I could feel the love and the pleasure they were having, clapping along to every song. It’s almost impossible to describe the feeling.”

Lynne’s new ELO music won’t arrive in stores until November, but until then, fans can content themselves with Live in Hyde Park, a concert film commemorating what he’s referred to as “one of the most memorable shows ever for me.” Available on a variety of physical and digital formats, the film arrived in stores Sept. 11.

An absolutely perfect ELO song, right down to the classic 50's drum sound.

I'd be interested if the rest of the songs are this amazing and if some of them "get going" a little more with the harmonies I remember.
