I was looking at some old Fillmore East shows and ran across these three shows ~

29 May 1969 Led Zeppelin, Woody Herman & His Orchestra, Delaney & Bonnie

30 May 1969 Led Zeppelin, Woody Herman & His Orchestra, Delaney & Bonnie

31 May 1969 Led Zeppelin, Woody Herman & His Orchestra, Delaney & Bonnie

Is it me or is it a strange concert line-up?

Yes it is a strange bill.

However, just looking at some old Fillmore posters, Bill Graham seemed to often book diverse acts together - but Woody Herman & LZ was pretty extreme.

I've seen another Bill Graham poster from 1969 for a Zep gig where Roland Kirk was one of the opening acts. If you're not familiar with him, he was one of the most 'out there' avant garde jazz musicians ever. Here's a picture of him:

He often played two horns at the same time. Like, crazy, man!

Yes, I would say it's bizarre.

But who knows? Maybe Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones got up to jam with Woody Herman & His Orchestra that night.

:dunno:

On the first Plant & Page tour, they had an Egyptian orchestra with them, and it was a mind-blowing mega spectacular jimmy jam.

I've posted videos of Woody Herman's Band and I agree that they are awsome ...

I found the pairing with LZ to be a bit strange and have to wonder about the age of the audience in attendence.

LZ in 1969 would've driven the 45 to 65 year olds away (today's audience) and the younger sons and daughters more than likely wouldn't have relished seeing Woody Herman.

Perhaps it was a show geared for "Sugar Daddies" with their "Sugar Babies"???? :oyea:

I'm from Cal and lived up in the Bay area and it dosn't surprise me at all that they throw to odd bands together for a concert..
If it was back in the 60's or 70's, people were open to what ever if it was a party..
I went to the Ontario jams during the 70's and the line ups were a mix of all kinds of bands..It was no big deal but more of a celebration of music.. Classic big band artist like Woody Herman are a treat to see.. It breaks up the music and shows a different genre.. Besides.. Kids parents played alot of big band stuff so it was kinda something you were used too..:)
