I've never been a fan of tribute albums. I think besides being musically irrelevant, the concept itself has run its course.

That said, one of the few tribute albums I ever purchased and actually liked and still do, is the Grateful Dead tribute album, Deadicated.

Really wonderful performances by Los Lobos, Elvis Costello, Warren Zevon, Dr. John and others.

The music on the album is so good that I've never felt like I was listening to a tribute album.

I actually don't think tribute albums have been overdone (except maybe the tributes to Elvis and Hendrix) but more like "cover" albums are exhausting. There are not very many bands out there that haven't made a cover album.

I agree with you, though, on the musical value and irrelevance of tribute albums (and cover albums)
