I do dig me some good old fashioned, funky-ass slap bass. of all the solos on this page, I'd rather listen to this style of bass 'solo' or playing than any other.
As for some of the bigger bassist names in classic rock; Entwistle, JP Jones, Geddy Lee, Geezer, etc. I think that Geddy Lee is the most techincally gifted of them all, and I really don't think it's close. I am not a big fan of Rush, but the biggest reason is Geddy's voice far more so than anything else. But the dude bleeds bass talent all over the studio and stage.
My next in line would probably be Geezer. Watching and listening to him over the years... he still amazes me. I think Geezer is twice the bassist that Entwistle was. John did some cool stuff in bass solos, but in normal studio or on stage with the Who, nothing really impressed me. Same goes with JPJ. A fine bassist, but I'm not sure worthy of the hype or accolades given to him. Plus on stage, the other 3 members of Zeppelin were so damn sloppy, it probably didn't matter what he did.
A couple of other guys that I think are phenominal bassists are:
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Stu Hamm (Satriani, Vai, G3, numerous other artists)
Billy Sheehan (David Lee Roth, Mr Big, Steve Vai, numerous other artists)
Victor Wooten (jazz / fusion bassist)
