Modern rock

I've been listening to stuff like The Strokes and Radiohead, which is considered indie or modern rock. I'm comparing it to rock in the 60's like Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, etc, to see which I like better. I like the new stuff better, but maybe that's because it's more relevant to my generation. What do you think?

I believe the era you are introduced to music will always be your favorite.

I am older. My introduction to rock was in the 60’s & 70’s. That is my favorite era of music. That doesn’t mean I have not began loving music from later eras. For instance, Dream Theater & Queensryche reshaped my listening preferences in the late 80’s & 90’s. Then Symphonic metal became my obsession in the 2000’s, actually the entire realm of heavy metal has been my obsession since the mid 2000’s.

However, I always go back to those rock/hard rock roots of the 60’s & 70’s.

I think you are correct.....most people I know listen to what they grew up with and then branch off into other eras later. I grew up in the 60's and 70's so those are my favorites but I do like some modern bands since then. I never really liked the 'new wave of metal' and listen to the older bands that began that style and the earlier first hard rock bands.
There are many , what I call, 2nd and third tier hard rock/metal bands , that simply ape the style of early bands like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple, ACDC, Rush, Iron Maiden, etc.
IMHO they have nothing to offer....why not listen to the original great bands? I see many hard rock bands get posted here, and I dont even know the names of most of them.

I am 68 and listen to mainly late 1960s & 1970s rock bands such as Hendrix, Cream, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, Mountain, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rory Gallagher, Montrose, Baker Gurvitz Army, Savoy Brown, Thin Lizzy, Robin Trower and all the usual associated bands from that era and with regards to 'newer' bands from the 1990s onwards to be honest it's all "rehash and has been done before better" by the rock bands of the late 1960s & 1970s.
