How can anyone avoid the rush of patriotism on a day like today? We hear a lot about the Great American Novel...but what about the Great American Song? Is there any song that you feel greatly exemplifies American life, values, or culture?
The rules:
- The song does NOT have to use the word "America" in the title, or the lyrics.
- This should be your idea of America, not necessarily an objective view.
- Only American artists...Sorry.
Shouldn't be hard for me... Most of the music I listen to is from North America, when push comes to shove...
Here's an easy one... 'Course we could post at least half of Bruce's catalog in here. He really does a perfect job of encapsulating the life and love, the turmoil but the transcendental moments that make it all worth while, the ethos of America...
Here's one from Tom, definitely a 'great American artist.' Perhaps American Girl would be the archetypal choice... but this track definitely encapsulates the roll with the punches, bloodied but unbowed attitude that makes America great.
Here's a new one... haha. Definitely think she's in the next line of 'great American artists.' People from the US are certainly known for their brashness, their fearlessness, for better or worse. It's a song about pure love and life and it immaculately symbolizes the innocence that makes America great, that we're a nation who strives towards that untarnished ideal.
Here's a song I was going to post until I remembered he's not an American.
It's easy to dwell on the worst aspects of war and the politics surrounding it. But I feel it bodes very well for Roger's grasp of the situation, that someone so outspoken about politics and so ardently against war... could author a song that encapsulates so well the motivations of the people fighting in it. This song perfectly represents my American Dream. Away from politicians who may or may not be disingenuous, away from nefarious propaganda.... you have men and women willing to sacrifice their own life for the dream that somewhere in the world there might be a place free from the darkest depths of living. A place where, even in dispute, even in hatred, respect for life is given heed, where children aren't raised as soldiers, where "a bad day" means you might lose your job, instead of meaning your family was raped and murdered when your village is ransacked by marauders. It's a dream that means the world to me.
