Re: Grateful Dead

Grateful Dead * Scarlet Begonias * 8-08-1982 *
Alpine Valley Music Theatre * East Troy, Wisconsin

Here's a real nice version of ''Scarlet Begonias'' from the summer of '82.
Not a perfect version, but it's pretty rockin'.
Check out the nice jam at the end.

Do yourself a favor and TURN IT UP!

Love it....Nice pick Groovy Man !

Re: Grateful Dead

I love the Europe 72 and the double "what a long strange trip its been". They have so much out there, but I can name at least 30 songs that I absolute love...especially right now with the beautiful weather here in Ontario,Canada !!

Yes, Europe '72...most excellent album...one of my favorites too.

And yeah, something about the nice spring weather and the Grateful Dead...it's like...magical!

Re: Grateful Dead

China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider

The Grateful Dead first performed "China Cat Sunflower" on January 22, 1968 (although in concert recordings are noted from January 17, 1968 at the Carousel Ballroom in San Fransisco, CA), and played the song well over 500 times in concert. During the first year after its introduction into the band's set list, the song was played by itself or often in the middle of an extended jam between the songs "Dark Star" and "The Eleven" - a position more familiarly (to Deadheads) filled by "St. Stephen".

In late 1969 the Grateful Dead began segueing "China Cat Sunflower" into "I Know You Rider" during live performances. Over the next 26 years they would pair these songs together over 500 times, most often as a second set opener. Only twice during this extended period was "China Cat Sunflower" played without this pairing. (Wikipedia)

Enjoy!

cool info GM
although dead setlist is only saying it wasn't played together once in 85.

That doesn't sound right...right?

Some of these setlist sites are not accurate, but who knows?
It was a sad day when Garcia passed away. I think he was far from reaching his peak. I don't care much for any of the projects the other members have launched since his passing (The Other Ones, The Dead, Phil and Friends, et. al.). It's not because I think he was the driving force behind the band...as important as he was...after all, they did call him Captain Trips. But the Grateful Dead were the perfect example of how important, how essential band chemistry is. You simply cannot have the Dead without Phil Lesh's slithering bass lines...or Bob Weir's tastefully sparse rhythm playing...or the double drum battery of Bill Kreutzmam and Mickey Hart...or the soulful keyboard playing and bluesy howling of Pigpen McKernan...no, wait...Pigpen died and they kept on truckin'...okay, Keith Godchauex was able to fill the opening well enough (then again, it WAS the Pigpen departure and the Godcheaux entrance that drew the dividing line between their best work and the rest)...then Godcheaux died and they trucked on with Brent Mydland...he added a nice modern touch and added another very strong voice to the mix...then HE died...all of which, I suppose, doesn't really say so much about band chemistry as it does pointing out that keyboard players in the band kicked it as frequently as Spinal Tap drummers.

But you get what I mean about the band chemistry. That and the fuel of energy generated by their audience, hands down the most devoted to ever follow a band, and the recipe for "classic" is ready to be thrown into the microwave.

Great band, but I really have to be in a certain mood to appreciate them...and I'm NOT necessarily talking about being sky high (though that helps).

Great post, jackory. Well put, I couldn't agree more.

You know your stuff.

Re: Grateful Dead

I have not been listening to the Dead enough lately. This thread is making me want to go dig up all my GD bootlegs and listen to them again. Unfortunately they're all on cassette. I need to get them transferred to cds....(I just don't listen to cassettes much anymore.)

If you haven't seen the dvd Festival Express, you should check it out. Its from 1970, and the Dead perform a couple of tunes in it. There's also a 'behind the scenes' part where Jerry is singing and playing acoustic by himself...which is AWESOME!

...and later in it there is a drunken jam with Jerry, Bob W., Rick Danko (from the Band), and Janis Joplin even sings a little in it...

Re: Grateful Dead

I first heard the Dead from my prison cell in Maidestone, England. They were on their Europe 72 tour and played radio Luxemburg. I was like, holy crap, this is good stuff. I got home to the states and went down to see them with the Allman Brothers at RFK Stadium in D.C. What a concert. Sadly, for a few years there the Dead were all I wanted to hear. I played all their songs on guitar. I wrote them a letter in about 73 asking if I could come join the community. They actually wrote me back, saying there wasn't room, but the idea that they even wrote back was cool as it gets. It is sad that Jerry couldn't get straight. I learned how to play rhythm guitar watching Bob Weir. And if Phil Lesh isn't one of the best bassists to hit the big time, just call me warn out.
