Pat Monahan (vocalist for Train)

highres_3163340.jpg

Train is like the little pop rock group that could. They aren't huge by any means and even the frontman would barely be recognized walking down the streets but they've managed to have at least one hit single for every c.d. they've released since 1998. The most recognizable ones being:

Meet Virginia

Drops of Jupiter

and most recently

Hey, Soul Sister

After hearing Pat Monahan's solo effort

Last of Seven

it's obvious it's not just his raspy voice that's contributed to the bands success. The guy is an amazing songwriter as proven by what he can do when given the reigns. This album is all over the place and better track for track than any Train album has been.

Dan Wilson (vocalist for Semisonic)

If you haven't heard Dan Wilsons band Semisonic and their 90'*****

Closing Time

then you were living underneath a rock. That song was the perfect pop song and though it was their only hit it the band had consistently crafted more perfect pop songs beyond that thanks to the writing of Dan Wilson. With their other ace single:

Chemistry

it's no wonder Dan Wilson became a successful songwriter for other bands after the departure of Semisonic. Dan Wilsons success as a songwriter gave him the opportunity at a new lease on music in the form of a solo album. The album:

was definitely an album by an artist who knows how to crank out the perfect pop hook but Dans solo work does this with an old soul that recognizes what made the greats work. Good storytelling, real instruments and a sincerity behind the music. Here are some tracks:

Sugar feat, Rachael Yamagata

IMHO, Southeastern, by former Drive-By Truckers guitarist/vocalist Jason Isbell was THE best album of 2013.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Mark Knopfler, formerly of Dire Straits. I really like his Sailing To Philadelphia album so I'll post a few tracks from it:
