Shades Of Deep Purple. "Hey Joe" is the best version I've heard. "Mandrake Root" is killer also. Deep Purple(1969) is very close. An excellent hard rock/ heavy prog album.

This is tough, but I'll go with the self-titled third album, Deep Purple.

As of today, I'd rank them like this...

Deep Purple(1969)
The Book Of Taliesyn (1968)
Shades Of Deep Purple (1968)

All epicly good classic albums, Shades was the best of those 3 in my opinion.

It comes down to "Shades of Deep Purple" and their self titled third album for me. If "April" had been on their debut then it would have been no contest but that made it harder. I still think I'm going to go with "Shades...".
