According to reports from the Gazet Van Antwerpen newspaper, Dan McCafferty, the lead singer of Scottish rock band Nazareth has suffered from a stroke and is currently recovering in a Swiss hospital.

Dan, aged 67, collapsed on stage in Canada last month resulting in the cancellation of Nazareth's remaining North American dates.

On Friday August 23rd, Nazareth appeared at the Summerdays Festival in Switzerland on a bill that also featured Krokus and Joe Cocker. However their set was cut short after McCafferty was having breathing troubles.

The band were due to appear two days later on Sunday 25th August at the Vostertfeesten Festival near Bree in Belgium where Nazareth were to be the headline band over such acts as Uriah Heep, Albert Hammond, Chris Thompson and Alvin Stardust.

However, according to festival organizer Xavier Weijtens: "Singer Dan McCafferty is located in Switzerland in hospital after he suffered a stroke. The second in a short time... We do not have time to find an alternative. But the other groups will today play for longer."

Dan McCafferty is one of the founding members of Nazareth who formed in 1968 and went on to be one of the biggest selling acts in the seventies, especially on mainland Europe where the band are still a big draw.

Nazareth, who released their last album 'Big Dogz' two years ago are due to play some UK dates in November including a show at the Hard Rock Hell festival.

There has been no official announcement from Nazareth as yet regarding Dan's health.

MetalTalk wishes Dan a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with him, his family and friends.

I'm not surprised by this news, when they cancelled their tour here a few weeks ago I had a feeling there was more to it than just fatigue.

Hope he gets better but with a stroke you never know what lingering symptoms you're going to be left with.

From their official page

We sadly have to tell you all that Dan has been forced to retire due to ill health.

He suffers from C.O.P.D. ( Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

It has gotten worse lately and after trying to play a festival in Switzerland last weekend Dan found it impossible to continue after performing only three songs.

In the dressing room afterwards he told the band that he couldn’t go on any longer.

We’ll keep you updated on further developments.

It sucks that their won't be any more Nazareth but his health is more important than some band.

Get well Dan and enjoy your retirement.
