Re: "The Official" Damien Rice Thread
This is the second single released off of the album. I can see why it was a single as to me it's the poppiest song. I find this song refreshing and uplifting even though Damien's songs are never 100% optimistic. Optimism is just not really what Damien's good at.
Regardless, this has a nice pleasant acoustic and Damien seems more reflective than depressed with the words he's singing. The raise in tone particularly towards the chorus seems to me like an enthusiasm for the life lessons he's acquired. Also notably, this song is carried with Lisa Hannigan involved so it's cool to see Damien carry a good solo song.

Cannonball

There's still a little bit of your taste in my mouth
There's still a little bit of you laced with my doubt
Its still a little hard to say what's going on
There's still a little bit of your ghost your witness
There's still a little bit of your face I haven't kissed
You step a little closer each day
That I can't say what´s going on
Stones taught me to fly
Love, it taught me to lie
Life, it taught me to die
So it's not hard to fall
When you float like a cannonball
There's still a little bit of your song in my ear
There's still a little bit of your words I long to hear
You step a little closer to me
So close that I can't see what´s going on
Stones taught me to fly
Love taught me to lie
Life taught me to die
So its not hard to fall
When you float like a cannon.
Stones taught me to fly
Love, it taught me to cry
So come on courage, teach me to be shy
'Cause its not hard to fall,
And I don't want to scare her
Its not hard to fall
And i don't want to lose
Its not hard to grow
When you know that you just don't know

The difference between him and Dylan is Dylan was political in politically charged times which pretty much added to his legend. Damien is more of a writer on a personal level and his songs are about personal freedoms and flaws more than cultural. He writes about love, sex, infidelity, inner demons and more sex! What makes him stand out is aside from the above is that I believe he's the best folk singer as far as making the listener feel his music ever. That's because he seems to feel everything he does and I believe besides being an artist it's because everything he writes is his personal story and events. He's raw and unfiltered as to the personal areas he explores and he gives his all on every performance! Amazing in every way IMO!
