I admire David Gates as a songwriter and singer. He has a very soothing voice and his love songs are among the best ever written...

It's interesting how Bread were, like Stealer's Wheel, made up of singer songwriters, but they only had success with the David Gates songs. It also seems that David Gates needed James Griffin around, even if Griffin did not write anything. I think it was strange how Bread broke through in the UK at around the same time as Alice Cooper. I suppose they balanced each other. I liked both and David Gates' songs have certainly stood the test of time.

My sister loved David Gates...I did own a copy of "Guitar Man" and a greatest hits package but that was it for Bread. I was always much more into heavy rock back then, not exclusively but it often came down to a choice between Deep Purple/BTO/The Beatles etc. and I didn't have a lot of money so that settled that.:grinthumb

I have all of Stealers Wheel's albums, and I like a couple of Rafferty's solo albums, in fact I like them and him more than Bread.

But I still do listen to their greatest hits compilation once in a blue moon, they were very polished and good at what they did.

BREAD (David Gates, James Griffin & Co.)

One of the great bands of the 70's. Look beyond the 'hits' and the 'ballads' and they recorded some truly great music. Here's the promotional video for my forthcoming biography (originally titled "Manna From Heaven") ...

BREAD (David Gates, James Griffin & Co.) - NEW BOOK - Promotional Video - YouTube

Please share it amongst your fellow music friends, even if it doesn't appeal to you personally (tho' I hope that's not the case !!)

I really dig Bread. I haven't heard anything from them I have a strong dislike for. The avatar kicks ass by the way.

Thanks man ! Check out the book - the story is well worth reading (if I say so myself). It wasn't all hits and soft-rock ;-)
