I actually knew Ozzy for a while late '70s/early '80s - so through the period he was booted out of the band. I used to see him regularly in the pub (of course :gig). So when he split from the band a bunch of us from the pub went to see him and the great Randy Rhoads and the guys perform 'Blizzard of Ozz'. Back to Sabbath - although I knew Ozzy, my favourite album was 'Heaven and Hell' with the superb RJD on vocals. Also, in my view, Tony Iommi was always the guy who made the whole thing tick, with his unique guitar style.

To meet Ozzy and drink with him back then would have been awesome.

Do you have any pictures of back then you could share?

No pics Magic. Obviously no phones at that time, and I guess I felt that it would be a bit un-cool to walk in the pub with a camera - didn't want to 'big' him up too much  He was really a regular guy in the pub sort - very easy to get on with, and not at all carried away with stardom. Ozzy was still with his first wife Thelma in those days, and Sharon was his manager. I met Thelma a few times - she never had a lot to say, but never met Sharon. He bought Thelma a wine bar in Newport, Shropshire, and although it's changed hands on numerous occasions since, it's still called 'Ozzy's'. Next time I'm out there I'll take a picture and put it up on here.

For those who have not seen my posts elsewhere on this forum... I'm busy immersing myself in Black Sabbath's classic albums, being familiar with only the We Sold Our Soul.. hits album for years and years.

I have a question for you people who know your guitar techniques.

I'm already aware that Soundgarden's grunge sound was heavily influenced by Sabbath. Forgive the simplicity of my question but does that mean Tony Iommi invented grunge??

Here's a quote from the AllMusic review for their debut album:

Circumstance certainly played some role in the birth of this musical revolution -- the sonic ugliness reflecting the bleak industrial nightmare of Birmingham; guitarist Tony Iommi's loss of two fingertips, which required him to play slower and to slacken the strings by tuning his guitar down, thus creating Sabbath's signature style.

That description there... isn't it the same thing they did for grunge music??

Also, it's interesting to note that if Iommi hadn't lost his two fingertips, they probably wouldn't have become so distinct and legendary at all. :D

No, not just no, but HELL NO!

Disagree completely. You can't take those 4 personalities and put them in the same room with all 40 (full) fingers and 40 toes, 8 hands/feet/ears and NOT come up with something epic. The tone may have been slightly different, however, from what I remember, Tony didn't start downtuning until the 3rd album. That would mean their epic first and second albums were already that... epic. The downtuning just gave him the ability to do more on the fretboard and gave Ozzy a bit of relief on high notes.

If you want to associate Tony Iommi with a genre that followed his footsteps, it can be only doom/stoner metal. Grunge? Like Lynch, never.

If somebody could explain how Iommi's downtuning was different from the downtuning that happened in grunge music, that would be helpful.
