Birmingham .England. Was there something in the water there ?

I am American but a huge chunk of my favorite bands of the 60's, 70's and 80's are from England. Every major wave of English bands (British Invasion of the mid 60's, early 70's Prog, NWOBHM) changed the music world drastically.

There were a lot of bands that originated from Seattle back in the 90's, but most specifically, before the 90's you had the Grunge era that Seattle brought into the world. As for bands in any era, were talkin Pink Floyd, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Tad, Soundgarden, and a lot more. Seattle is generally based around it's music, and very much into it's underground scene, specifically the hip hop scene. It's very low key, and a lot of great hip hop artists come from here.

It's a great city for music.

The industrial revolution began in the West Midlands and the subsequent heavy engineering seems to have had an influence on the heavy rock bands of the region. An atmosphere of smoking factories, smelting metal and pounding machinery seems to have worked its way into the psyche of the likes of the young Black Sabbath, Judus Priest and others.

Influences come from a variety of sources, including the environment. The Beatles listened to records imported into the Liverpool docks from the US. Many British progressive rock musicians were influenced by the Protestant church music of their upbringing.

Some places do seem to produce a disproportionate number of heavy rock bands, like Birmingham, South Wales (again, perhaps from the legacy of community singing and church music) and parts of Canada (I'm not sure which).

Yes indeed Cannons Ahoy Pink Floyd is a quintessential English band, Prime must have had a little too much caffeine when he posted that dissertation...coffee is another thing Seattle is famous for.

Canterbury produced a number of good bands, with their own distinctive style, such as Soft Machine and Caravan, which were labelled 'the Canterbury scene'. The genre spread to the extent that there are Canterbury bands all over the world, including the excellent Happy the Man in the US.

Aylesbury is indeed Marillion, but Portsmouth is Gentle Giant.
