Bands That You Missed The Boat On?

I guess the point of this thread would be bands who that have been around for quite some time yet you either ignored or just couldn't get into though in the more recent years have either discovered or rediscovered them.

Here would be some of mine :

Grand Funk : though I had a few of their records, for the longest time could never get the appeal that they had and thought they were overrated. Though more recently was going through my record collection and decided to throw on "Grand Funk" (The Red Album) and thought to myself "Wow this is actually a really good album" then went out and bought "On Time" and "Survival" and have become a fan.

Anthrax : despite liking a lot of metal from the 80's for whatever reason I just completely ignored this band and never listened to them until more recently heard a few of their tunes and then went out and bought "Spreading The Disease" and have taken a strong liking to them.

Wishbone Ash : back in the early 80's picked up "Pilgrimage" on audio cassette where I listened to it once and wasn't very impressed. Don't know if I was in a bad mood or was expecting a completely different sound or whatever. Though more recently decided to give it a listen and thought "How could I have not liked this!!!!" Then went out and bought "Wishbone Ash' and "Argus" which are two great albums (cds).

Thin Lizzy : while having their greatest hits and "Jailbreak" in my collection I never really thought much of them. Though after hearing Eddie Trunk talk about them quite often on "That Metal Show" decided to give them another try and realized that they have quite a few good songs.

Overkill : like Anthrax completely overlooked them though after listening to their music realized that they're probably one of the most underrated metal bands of the 80's.

My biggest musical regret is probably the fact that I totally missed out on Sparks until like, 2008.

They've been making music since 1972. :/

Wow where do I start...

So many bands I can think of, mostly from Europe, I'll be back tomorrow and post some that I missed somehow but absolutely love now.

......... Mine is dismissing bands like The Cure etc when I was alot younger and going through my 'it's heavy rock' or nothing phase. The foolishness of youth !!

I am like LG, where to start from. It is amazing how many bands I have missed the boat on. One of the biggest genres I had totally ignored in the past was blues and blues-rock. I have discovered and re-discovered so many bands and artists that I am kinda ashamed to mention them all.


It is funny how narrowly focused my listening tastes were when I was younger

Totally passed up on AFI without even really listening to their music quite simply because of their reputation.

Rejected the Cure on the basis that they not only existed in the 80's but were popular

The dandy warhols because I had heard a song which I didn't like and mistakenly thought it was by them

Mumford And sons, I don't even know why

Green Day because of Billy Joe Armstrong's guyliner at the peak of the whole emo thing

Moby because the school chaplain professed her love for him

Nine Inch Nails because their name makes them sound like a hardcore heavy metal group

Nirvana because they were depressing and angsty

Radiohead because they were depressing and angsty

Silverchair because I only initially knew them from the young modern album and didn't realise they were a brilliant grunge band

Vampire weekend because I felt that they were just going to be a twilight tribute band

Arcade Fire because I don't even know I just had this idea that I didn't want to listen to them

Also Radiohead. I didn't like them because I didn't want to hear all this depressing music. But then they came to Chile a couple of years ago (which was a big deal because they are very popular here and it was the first time they came around) and my father bought me tickets. And I said "What the hell ... I gotta listen to them if i'm going to their concert" ... And downloaded their whole discography ... and it's beautiful. They have such great songs.

Also The Beatles. I didn't want to hear them because I had this image of them being this Boy-Band-ish group, but when I heard them a lot I fell in love with them. They totally rock and are the best band EVER.

So many but I'll give it to two types of music I love today
Italian prog ( the big three )and other obscure prog bands (like magma)

And shoegasing bands if the early 90s

I once dismissed The Flaming Lips back in the early 90's until I saw them on Austin City Limits on a local PBS station back in 2006. I've been hooked ever since.

I was bought The Wall for christmas,I recently bought A Momentary Lapse of Reason,Atom Heart Mother.I also bought Dark Side of the Moon a few weeks back,and i have to say i love it.
