Maybe it could be viewed two ways. Was the band in question deliberately adopting a particular style/sound or was their style just the way they sounded naturally and most of what they produce sounds similar to a recognizable band/style?
Have to think on this. A deliberate style was undertaken by Frank Zappa with his Ruben And The Jets album, capturing the fifties doo-wop/R&B style, complete with all the hooks and cliche vocals, lyrics and atmosphere, served up wonderfully by Frank and Co.
The Beau Brummels sound an awful lot like the Beatles. The Count Five, specifically Psychotic Reaction, takes a big page from the Yardbirds. I think not as deliberate but their overall sound crossover was a wide example of quite a few bands after Beatlemania hit, and the British invasion influence in general for a few years in the mid 60's.
