    The Worst Musical Decade?

Yeah, I remember discussing this with you before. I'm not really saying that I dislike albums because I don't. I have hundreds of them myself, on both vinyl and CD. But your approach to listening and mine are certainly different. Maybe I just have a short attention span. Even when I put...

    The Worst Musical Decade?

It can but most albums aren't anywhere close to being that good. Most albums are nothing more than a collection of songs. In fact, most albums are a couple of good songs and a bunch of filler.

    The Worst Musical Decade?

Then why do you turn right around and argue the point below? That's largely an archaic point of view, especially in this day and age. You could put together a much better playlist with an mp3 player than simply by throwing on an album, if all you want is music that you enjoy. Yes, I love...

    The Worst Musical Decade?

The singles themselves started going downhill at that time. Whether you agree or not, music changed as the album grew in importance. The only argument would be whether it changed for the better or worse.

    The Worst Musical Decade?

That's what I'm saying. It wasn't all tied to the album but a lot of it was.

    The Worst Musical Decade?

You honestly believe the 50's were a worse musical decade then the last ten years?

    The Worst Musical Decade?

1966 to be precise. It's probably no coincidence that the album started rising in importance just at that time.

    The Worst Musical Decade?

Interesting, if albums had been important in the 50's, I wonder if you'd dig the sound as much. The rise in the importance of albums was one of the driving forces that changed the production techniques you like so much. It would have changed the length of songs and probably the gritty sound...

    The Worst Musical Decade?

Nobody said that you shouldn't be biased anyway. If you like the music of a particular era for its overall sound or even if it just brings back fond memories, there's no disgrace in that kind of bias.

    The Worst Musical Decade?

Yeah, I agree. I think, like rock and roll, the blues was much less assuming and self-conscious in those days.

    The Worst Musical Decade?

That is fair and I don't really expect many folks here to share my view. When you talk about someone like B.B. King, do you like his 50's material or more his more recent stuff? Like rock and roll, there's a pretty big difference how blues sounded in the 1950's compared to more modern blues...

    The Worst Musical Decade?

Everyone? Only 20% of the vote has gone to the 50's, just slightly more than the law of averages would dictate.

    The Worst Musical Decade?

You could say that about any decade, certainly including the 70's.
  17. troggy

    The Worst Musical Decade?

You most definitely didn't have to be there. The music of that era is great regardless whether you were there or not, the general lack of interest on this board notwithstanding. You could make a good argument that 1955-57 are the three strongest consecutive years of the entire rock and roll era.

Thread Closed What Are You Listening To?

Re: What Are You Listening To Vol. 6 I'm listening to American Top 40, the 70's. This week, they're doing a show from August 1970, 40 years ago this week. 11. "War" - Edwin Starr 10. "Ooh Child" - The Five Stairsteps 9. "Ball of Confusion" - The Temptations 8. "The Love You Save" - The...

Fair enough, I'm not sure that Barry Manilow really qualifies as either but it's no big deal.

    Your Favorite Rock/Power Ballad?

I am chilled. Why would I show you, when I'm the one asking what they are? I've already said twice that I don't really like power ballads, at least as I understand what they are. Ballads weren't mutually excluded, I suppose, though the original post asked for favorite rock/power ballads.

    Your Favorite Rock/Power Ballad?

Yes but her response to me was far more negative than anything I've posted in this thread. And I did later contribute by asking for someone to differentiate between ballad and "power" ballad. But far be it from me to try and have a conversation here, when the goal is to post lists and videos.
