Re: Kate Bush

:grinthumb Great reading, and a fine write up Tray :grinthumb.

Along with Tray, there are so many people on CRF who should have been in the world of Rock Journalism. It was there loss, but CRFs gain :D.

Re: Kate Bush

I forgot where your thread was for a bit Tray...:bonk:

Definitely showing signs of senility I figure.:heheh:

Anyway, I have listened to my two Kate albums twice,,,and although I can honestly say I like her a lot more now than when she burst into prominence I am not sure I will ever play her music very often.

But I intend on playing them once more tomorrow before I decide anything else.

That is in no way taking away from the stellar effort you have put into your Opus for all things Kate, I never thought I would revisit her music again, until you posted all your personal stories and how it tied in with her music when you were growing up.

:cheers2

Re: Kate Bush

I really appreciate the fact that you have given Kate's music another go LG :) Hey we can't all be passionate about the same things can we, so I totally understand if she isn't your cup of tea! But if my thread has resulted in you liking Kate just a little bit more than when you first heard her music, then that's great.
And thanks so much for following the thread when you aren't even a fan :cheers2

Re: Kate Bush

We are now up to 1983 - a year that saw a new studio being built at Kate's childhood home, East Wickham Farm, converting one of the farm's barns to a professional 24-track (it would later be expanded to 48-track) studio. Kate had said working in commercial studios was something she couldn't continue to do as she didn't want to feel rushed because of costs -the hourly rate of using the studios was a very high amount and as her work was very experimental it wasn't the quickest process. Kate didn't want the added pressure of keeping an eye on time as this can stifle the creative process, so what better than her own studio where she could take as much time as she wanted!

In September 1983 Kate started writing and demoing for her next album, Hounds of Love, working from commecial studios as her own wasn't yet ready. Just before Christmas her first collection of promo videos, 'The Singles File', was released which was followed by The Single File box of records (all Kate's singles up until that date) a month later.

Beginning of January, 1984, Kate was able to make use of her own new studio, now just about completed, and work continued on material for Hounds of Love, which would be finished in June 1985 and released a few months later.

In August 1985 the lead single off Kate's new album was released, Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God). Entering the UK singles chart at number 9 and climbing to number 3, and going top ten in most of Europe and Australia, it was the most successful single since Wuthering Heights.

Hounds of Love

Released 16th September, 1985

Track List

Hounds Of Love
01 Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)
02 Hounds Of Love
03 The Big Sky
04 Mother Stands For Comfort
05 Cloudbusting
The Ninth Wave
06 And Dream Of Sheep
07 Under Ice
08 Waking The Witch
09 Watching You Without Me
10 Jig Of Life
11 Hello Earth
12 The Morning Fog

Highest UK chart Position: 1]

With this album we hear a less-weird Kate compared to her last offering,The Dreaming - it's probably her most accesible album. It is split into two parts, 'Hounds of Love' with radio friendly pop tunes (four out of the five were hit singles) based around love and relationships and 'The Ninth Wave', a concept suite with more adventurous songs. The Ninth Wave (this title is taken from a quote in a Tennyson poem) is the story of a woman stranded alone in the sea for the night. And Dream Of Sheep starts the tale - she is terrified and wants to fall alseep to escape the nightmarish situation she is in, but falling asleep could be dangerous as she could drown. We are then taken on a journey through the thoughts, dreams and hallucinations of a soul who is slipping in and out of consciousness and looking death in the face. It's deep, complex and dark but we see a happy ending in The Morning Fog, where rescue comes and she is reunited with her loved ones and has a new found love of life.

Hounds Of Love is rightly hailed as a classic and features in many 'best-ever' or 'top' albums lists run by music mags. It's often cited by people as their favourite Kate Bush album and would certainly be an ideal starter album for newcomers to Kate's music. It's a timeless piece of work and sounds as fresh now as the first time I heard it way back when :)

Hounds Of Love (my favourite from the first part of the album)

Re: Kate Bush

Smart, talented, inventive and gorgeous, no denying Kate has it all Tray.

Another excellent post in your Kate Homage.

Steve Winwood has a studio in his estate as well, probably for the same reasons you listed Kate built hers. Saw a show on him a couple of years back and he was in great form, happy, still recording and spending quality time with his family.

You could take up writing professionally judging by this effort Tray.:cheers2

:grinthumb Hounds of Love is up there among my fave Kate Bush albums. the Red Shoes is also a very good album, with some very poignant songs on there which reflect so many feelings that we experience at the time of splitting up with someone.

Your clearly a big Kate fan Tray, Have you got 'This Womans Work- Live -CD'. I believe it came with the box set and contains alot of rare live material. Is the sound quality any good ?. :cheers2

Thanks LG, that's a huge compliment! Writing doesn't come easy to me - it takes me ages to think how to put down into words what I want to say, it drives me mad at times! Sox is a much better writer, I keep giving him a nudge to do an album review :)

If you have the money to build your own studio at home I think it's a no brainer, sure it'll cost a lot to build the studio but in the long term it'll save them a lot of money I imagine. Plus inspiration and creativity seem to come a lot easier when you are relaxed (well it does for me where art and design is concerned - when I'm chilled on a couple of glasses of red the ideas come flooding in :D), and there's no place better than home for feeling relaxed :)

Yes I really like The Red Shoes too. I remember you mentioning earlier in the thread that you like And Dream Of Sheep and Under Ice. Just interested to know what are your favourites from the first part of the album. I don't know why but Running Up That Hill has never done a lot for me - I hear everybody rave on about how utterly brilliant it is, but it's just never grabbed me.

No I don't have that CD, sounds good though!

:cheers2 LG and Bryter for your input :grinthumb

Re: Kate Bush

I've been encouraging him myself.:D

Indeed I've lost track of how many times I've posted something edited it a few times, deleted it completely and then rewritten it to get it exactly right.

Half the battle of writing anything is knowing when to take your pen off the page and be satisfied with it.
