I thought I'd give props to two bands who were actually part of the late 60s British music scene, but are better remembered for their later career sound

Status Quo. Actually a great kind of poppy but gritty band in the 60s. Quite different from their later 3 chord rock & roll stuff.

The Bee Gees! Forget about all that Saturday Night Fever stuff, gold suits and medallions, The Bee Gees were a really good (and popular!) pop group that was reminiscent of some mid era Beatles. And they could even get a kind of soulful hard rock sound on the occasional song.
