I hate it when people say "It's just a song"

See I do ALL of the driving, no one is allowed to touch the radio. ;)

(but I also don't hardly ever touch the dial either)

I do a lot of the long distance driving, and I love to listen to rockers. My husband claims it makes me drive too fast and he calls me Danica Patrick, yet he has four speeding tickets, and I have zip! :steering:

I'm in the same boat as Jet

I have always been into Rock n Roll, Heavy Rock, Metal and Prog Rock

I am married to a singer who sings opera, classical, musical theatre etc
We have both learned to appreciate each others musical tastes, I now do all the techie stuff for my wife and she has discovered that even Heavy Metal has melody and takes skill to create.

Yep! When you are in that kind of boat, you either learn to paddle together or sink. :gig

I was almost into this thread by the title as I thought it was a celebration of music in itself and how some don't think music is anything higher than "just a song" but I lost interest after it became about music hipster snobbishness which defies what music is about in the first place! Carry on.......:grinthumb

Let's bring it back to what it originally was then: I didn't mean I lost interest in my fiancee at all for that, I wanted to emphasize in the fact that she always repeats to me that a song is "just a song" and a movie is "just a movie" to end discussions...

Personally, I think there's much more than that to it... I listen to the music I listen to because I feel identified with it, just because my gut tells me which one I like and which one I don't because my gut is smart and knows if the music a band makes goes along with my personality and beliefs, I kind of feel it.

I kind of found out about this not long ago... Because I have always had different tastes in music, but I think it all comes down to feeling that I belong when I listen to someone, to feeling that I could go out for a drink with the people that have written those songs and have a great time... Which I don't think I would do with Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus.

So, yeah... Music is an expression of who we are, mainly because people who like something or something else have a personality defined in a way by the music they listen to. Also, mentioning the "hipsters" that Soot and Stars made reference to... I don't really get along with them, why? Because what they listen to is really not what their gut tells them to listen to (At least the ones I know), they listen to what's not mainstream, they listen to music only taking into account how obscure it is and stuff like that, not really for the music... And such a lack of tastes shows a lack of personality to me.

And sorry if I am still being hipsterish, but it's damn hard not to be hipsterish these days! You can't even have a moustache anymore! :D

By the way, I think I am going to have to be the one driving ;)

O.K., we are on a plane I can relate to now and while it wasn't a personal shot at anyone in particular other than just the idea of thinking that way thanks for taking that hipster comment in stride. You've got a good sense of humor and i got a chuckle or two from your response. That's actually the first comment I've wrote in the forum after trekking back from a three hour drive after seeing one of the best live artist I'll ever see. I'm surging and still buzzing in a positive way after being wrapped up in that world of song which is why I support anything that goes on against the absurdity of calling "music" just "music" or a "song" just a "song" as an argument. I just take that token further.

I can be friends with anyone. I have that extra attraction to people who are passionate towards music. Not "this" music or "that" music but music in general. What I don't care for as much I know that somebody has wrapped themselves up in that passionate place to create it and some other lucky Soul has found that same sweet spot and wrapped themselves in that same space or somewhere near it no one approaches something exactly the same way. It's a beautiful thing and every song whether you find it shallow or not provides that for someone.

There's no specific intelligence needed to embrace a song the "right" way. Music is a cathartic, carnal, spiritual place and if someone gets that even from Miley it's a passion I can relate to. If I have a way to find that place I want in! I don't own her music but I get it and she's one of the smartest pop stars out there. I have no desire to go off subject anymore regarding her but it's one small example. If anyone is passionate enough to ramble off reasons they are moved by any artist even if it's as simple as it moves their body on the dance floor then that's legit. If they say a song is just a song across the board then I'll struggle not to look at them like a three headed dragon! :heheh: I believe in lack of passion and that's just sad but I don't believe in lack of taste at all! :cheers2

See? With you I would go for a beer without hesitation :D

I really get your response, and it's also what I think... I think if you enjoy something you should be proud of it because that's who you are, life is too short to be wasting it listening to the music that plays on the radio just so you can be popular or listening to obscure stuff just so you can feel cooler, or listening to music someone else considers good but you don't! I respect people that like Miley Cyrus and enjoy her music.

I definitely respect people that like the kind of music I don't like, as long as that's the reason why they listen to it. But sometimes it's hard for me to distinguish between people that actually enjoy a kind of music and people who just do it for show.

The fact of the matter is that I have always been tempted to do the same, to just start listening to pop music so I can relate more to people around me... It's just not something I can do... And it really caught my attention that you used the word "hipster" because that's precisely what I have been always being try to avoid, seeming different from people and letting them know that I like other music that I consider superior for the way it's crafted etc.

I guess I haven't really found people that shared my interests yet, I like what I like too much, and sometimes I feel kind of annoyed and don't understand why other people don't like it... People can defend the music they like will never be hipsters if the music is popular. At least where I live it's really uncommon to like classic rock but I had many influences from my father and... That's just what I like. The reason I made this thread is because now I am starting to feel related to people here, I wanted to know if someone else had been in the same situation.

But as you very well said, life is to be enjoyed... And it's stupid to stop listening to music just because others consider it to be worse, and I never ever have critizised anyone who really liked their stuff, and I have many, many friends (Actually all of them but one) that have completely different tastes to mine.

I hope I made myself clear, I am not as good as you with words... You are a poet man :D

^^^^^^

No worries man! Well stated! :grinthumb I just get by on diarrhea of the keyboard myself! :heheh: It's really funny because I came to the forums as someone who liked plenty of classics but who's bread and butter was primarily music from their prime of the 90's forth. I didn't come to this forum saying I wanted a forum for classic rock fans just like me. Classic Rock was my side dish but I followed to forum friends I had immense respect for in the forum world and the rest is history. I'm still the guy with the never ending 2013 thread but I'm buying classic rock releases left and right because of the added culture of this place. It's enriched me very much. What I was getting to with this bit of history is that it's put me in an odd place in my musical/social culture. Some people in the forum wonder, and fairly so without knowing my history, why the guy who has enthusiasm for what they call a void of quality in the newer music scene would even be here and my real life friends say I don't keep up with new music anymore and listen to a lot of old crap. :oyea: You can't win! :oyea: But the beauty of it though and why I'm here rather than an all music forum is that bridge man! I can take a handful of people and get them to cross and share a passion that they wouldn't have explored otherwise and I can also cross that bridge myself and benefit. We are all hear with different viewpoints, demeanors and taste but I've never seen anyone here lack passion for music or a great song. You've come to the right place! :grinthumb
