Yea maybe I'll do that. I'll use the "subscribe to thread" feature.
I wonder if I should also try logging in everytime I visit the forum instead of being permanently logged in.

I stay logged in ALL of the time. Assuming that I understand what you are talking about, I'm not sure it will matter how/when/if you are logged in all of the time, or you log in and out. I think it's a "feature" 
of the vbulletin software that is turned on. I used to admin a handful of other sites and we never had this happen, yet in 2 of the forums that I still post at (this being one of them), it seems that sometimes the new posts (subscribed or unsubscribed) seem to just disappear before you even read them.
It annoys me as well. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about it here since i don't have that access and it would take me a while to even figure out what setting it is that causes this. *shrug*

The other thing is, maybe once we move on from vBulletin to the new software this problem won't occur.

Okay something strange just happened. I closed the window and in a few minutes again revisited the forum, all the while permanently logged in... and everything became unread!.. even stuff I have already read. Haha this forum is possessed.

That can sometimes happen if the browser crashes or is closed while in the midst of a crash. I've seen that happen to me on multiple sites.
There would be no point resetting anything for the problem MK is having, he's the only one experiencing this phenomenon on a regular basis.
I didn't realize he was logging in permanently, but like Magic said VB cycles and refreshes every so often so if you are logged in all the time in it will show all the new posts as read if you are logged in when it goes through that refresh cycle.

You are experiencing session time outs being logged in all the time. After 45 minutes of inactivity (not posting or refreshing a page) vbulletin assumes you SHOULD be logged out. It clears your cookies, and you lose your unread threads.
As I stated earlier, you can see all new posts in the last 24 hours (updated threads) by going to the navigation bar on the top of the page, clicking quick links then select todays posts from the drop down menu.

This is because VBulletin has an admin set feature for session time outs. I have that time allotment set to 45 minutes (vb default time is 15 minutes). Vbulletin logs you out and clears your cookies BUT you are not actually logged out.............once you refresh the page or "click" something, you are in session again. Unfortunately, you lose the previously unread threads. You will see instead "threads updated since last visit" which will appear if you click new posts.
It is all very confusing, but easily worked around if you use the feature I mentioned above to Musikwala
