What are the worst band names ever?

How about Meat Puppets?

There are some awful metal band names.
Cannibal Corpse, Sodom... wtf, why would I wanna listen to them...

I don't mind a couple of meat Puppets albums, but the name sucks for sure.

Cannibal Corpse, definitely shock value along with their cover art which is simply awful.

Sodom, I have one of their albums but haven't played it for years. I always think of them as "Sodom and Gomorrah" from the biblical story.

Cannibal Corpse seems an awful name to the non death metal fan but as a death metal band and to the fans of the genre it is a pretty damn good band name. Their album covers were definitely not to everyones liking (I for one love their artwork) though. Just comes down to taste I suppose and as for a question about being put off by a band name, I personally have never really been put off by a band name, I always try to give the music a chance even if the band name is pretty shit.

Most people will say some of the names are awful in the death metal scene but those names are good when it comes to what they are which is a death metal band. You can't have a death metal band without having some level of creativity in the name and the artworks.

However I could understand people being put off a little by a band name like Dying Fetus or even Deicide but again I respect that it comes down to whether they are a fan or just really don't like any of that sort of stuff. Death metal bands are meant to come up with things as a shock, not everyone is going to like it but the intent is there just like punk was considering Death Metal has punk and thrash influence in there.

I have an open mind when it comes to many things, but the artwork on some hardcore metal bands is extremely offensive. I don't favor censorship but there is a line between good taste and disgusting.

There is worse on some Carcass albums. At least the Cannibal Corpse covers are more cartoony whereas Mayhem did a cover with their dead band member on it which I even thought was tasteless and Carcass did the same too with some album covers. There is a fine line too with me even though I really like some brutal album covers but the Mayhem one and one of the Carcass covers was a bit too far.

But as I said I respect the fact people don't feel the same way I do about the CC album covers, some don't dig that gory artwork that I like. And to be fair when it comes to CC George Fisher has said numerous times it is like telling horror stories but in music form and people shouldn't take them as seriously as some people seem to.

As for wanting to listen to them or not based on the name I definitely understand exactly where you are coming from too, its safe to assume their album names also suggest the music will be extreme and not to everyone's taste.

I still think Butthole Surfers is one of the worst names I have seen for a band. The music is decent but the band name is pretty dire. lol

I am dissuaded from listening to so many of those kind of metal bands because the cover art is so gruesome.(And you know how I feel about certain vocals styles by now. )

The gothic /Death rock scene has spawned some really dreadful names over the years.......Alien Sex Fiend, Sex Gang Children, Virgin Prunes.....but are tame compared to MIGHTY SPHINCTER
Musically they vary from the very bad...to the inspired [ They do a decent version to " Don't fear the reaper"
Dressed like " A really BAD B-Movie Vampire/Zombie film " I don't think they take themselves TOO seriously.
This is them at their worst......

Dropkick Murphies (don't really know what this means...)
The Wallflowers (always found this name plain and pretty boring music too.)
Fine Young Canabails (always thought it was a weird name)
Savage Garden (weird name, guess it sound better than savage potateos or ravenous carrots)

I agree with most of your selections but I think B-52s is a great name for a band.
