^^I did pick up the new EMI vinyl release of The White Album last year, and it sounds excellent.

Still it has the worst song the Beatles ever recorded by a country mile, everyone knows which track I mean without saying it. I would have told John to stuff it and take the bloody useless noise off the record, save it for a solo album and let George and Ringo have a song each. Would have made for a better album and been fair to them as John and Paul dominated so many of their records. I still skip over that track whenever I play the White Album.

The wealth of variety on this one is amazing.By the time one gets to the end of a listen,he may feel as if he'd just been listening to tunes by four or five different bands. All good ones,of course.I even like John's foray into the avant garde,"Revolution 9".And despite the lack of any real front cover graphics, its even iconic in THIS deaprtment!I miss MY old copy,an early eighties purple Capitol label complete with the poster and four individual Fab photographs. These,of course, went by the wayside around the same time Capitol ceased production of the now prized "Magical Mystery Tour" booklet,a treasure trove for "Paul-Is-Dead" ghouls...

^^You are far more generous than I am HGM...'avant garde' is a description I've heard given to #9 quite a few times, to me it's rubbish and believe me I've tried to "get it" but just can't do it.:nw:

I don't have an original Magical Mystery Tour album but a 2nd or 3rd run pressing unfortunately it's damaged and is only good for the cover.:(

If I may add my 2 cents on the "Revolution 9" discussion, that track scared me when I was a little kid. I kind of like it now, mainly because only The Beatles could have gotten away with putting a track like that on an album. Only The Beatles could have released "Elenore Rigby", which is basically chamber music, as a single and watch it hit the top of the pop charts. I love that they did stuff like that. Plus, as "The White Album" is my favorite Beatles album, I wouldn't change a thing. It's weirdness and variety is what makes it great.

^^I agree to a point, but just can't accept #9 as anything but a waste of space on an otherwise top notch album. I have to wonder what John was on when he came up with that song.

Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album, Let It Be, my list of favorites in order.

I agree, though great, the white album has some "fillers". They left Lady Madonna and Hey Bulldog (a favorite of mine) out of the album... had they included these tracks, it would be a much stronger effort. I don't wanna sound square, i frankly like experimental stuff, but i prefer music in its traditional form, specially when we're talking The Beatles.

The fact the Beatles not only got away with their experimentation of styles but also delivered what is now highly regarded as one of rock's grandest echelon works,it proved once and for all that by this point in their career as a band, they held such a high standing or commercial clout everyone was thrilled at the chance to hear what new heights of craftmanship they would aspire to next."White Album" bold range of perspective would have proven more difficult to convey from a younger upstart.Say Badfinger....
