I'm not much on the newer stuff, simply because there's so much great old stuff out there, I haven't really had to look much past the mid 70's or thereabouts.
The cool thing is... I still haven't
really started looking yet. I'm a big Motown fan, but I'm just a rookie in regards to soul. I don't know why I haven't amassed a larger collection, because what I
do have is frappin' awesome stuff.
Ok, here goes...
A compilation cd, probably the purest 'soul' album I have, as far as every track having a soul core.
Another compilation album. I've always meant to buy something besides a G.H. album, because this guy lives up to the hype, and I know he's gotta have some gritty, groovy stuff you never hear on the radio.
Fontella Bass, (who just passed on this past December), waayyyyy underrated. 'Rescue Me' was her big hit, but she has stuff far more soulful, from down deeper. Check her out if you get a chance. (said the guy that owns exactly 1 Fontella Bass album)
Eddie Kendrick's first solo record, it's pretty compact (around 30 minutes), there's a bit of radio stuff, but it has an overall soul flavor.
Dinah Washington. Now, this girl, I absolutely love. I have some live stuff as well as studio recordings. Her voice just has that tone, or resonance, or whatever, that is very, very pleasing to my ear. So smooth, but at the same time, with an edge. Can't explain why it's so appealing. It just
is.
