Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart used to tell a story about what inspired them to write "Last Train To Clarksville". They were listening to the radio and heard the fade out to "Paperback Writer". They thought The Beatles were singing "Last Train to..." something they couldn't make out. Later, when they heard the whole song, they realized it had nothing at all to do with trains. They figured since The Beatles hadn't written a song about trains, it would be O.K. for them to, and "Last Train To Clarksville" was born.
