^^Well Sox is our resident Rush expert Khor but from what I've read "Didacts" means teacher...and "Narpet" is an anagram of the word parent. According to a lyric site I looked at the meaning of the song is stated near the end.

Sorry if that's not much help.

Most of their albums for me are a must own, but the one`s I`d recommend to go on with are the following, in no particular order ......

Moving Pictures
2112
A Farewell To Kings
Hemispheres
Permanent Waves

2112 is their best album in my view and they only came close with A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. Moving Pictures is popular, but for me it was the start of their decline and is very repetitive. There is a live triple album, Different Stages, and the third disc, recorded for the BBC, is excellent.

Chronicles on CD or DVD is a 'greatest hits', which serves as an introduction and, while not terrible, you can see or hear the move away from heavy rock to a more commercial style. Avoid the more recent albums. The early albums are Led Zep-like, but not in a bad way.

well, considering you are 50 years old and grew up listening to English and American 70's rock, I think you would also LOVE:

Fly By Night
Caress Of Steel
Rush self titled.

all three great 70's hard rock/stoner rock in the vein of Led Zeppelin with prog rock tendencies of Yes. If you love the bass, Rush is unbelievable.

Any album before Permanent Waves is guaranteed to deliver. From Permanent Waves through Grace Under Pressure the albums are very good but not nearly as intense or interesting as Hemispheres on back.
The first album and even Fly By Night are more like traditional hard blues based rock but even these have heavy traces of something very unique.

My personal favorites are all the albums between Caress of Steel and Hemispheres inclusive. Their first live album is my favorite live album anyone has ever done. I've heard them say things to the effect that this album was very roughly rendered and almost embarrasing at times but while definately authentic and unpolished I don't really agree with this. It's a triumph through and through as far as I'm concerned.

Cream is the greatest power trio in rock history. Rush is second. Rush is a popular live band, but I must admit I loathe arena rock with all of the lights, video screens, and screaming fans, so I've never had a desire to go see them. I do like their studio albums from 2112 through Hold Your Fire.

Well, they didn't start out with video screens and I agree they have used them badly (who really thought any of that shit enhanced a Rush concert? I really want to know?). But a real Rush concert is about the music.
Now, I have never seen Cream or the Experience, or Budgie, or The James Gang live but the good concerts I saw Rush play would take some serious beating.

I don't mind the screen work. I admit some of it is better than others, but overall quite entertaining. In the end though, it really IS the music.

Speaking of music...we had a few problem areas in this thread with videos playing. They're all restored now so enjoy.
