I personally liked the self titled album a bit more but that doesn't take away from Moving Pictures as that is brilliant.

I've got the first album and a Gold greatest hits 2cd compilation. If I want Rush, I listen to the first album most of the time. I'd say it's up there with my favourite debut albums. It is that good. Imagine if Rush had followed the balls out hard rock route instead of the prog route they took...

^^^ If I remember correctly didn't someone mention it was Geddy that wanted to pursue the prog rock direction? I don't have the first album but from what I have heard there's a big difference. Not sure if I could get into it now though but Riffy "Moving Pictures" was one of THE best album purchases I made last year as well as "90125" by Yes. Thanks to both I'm more into prog than I've ever been. :D

From the few words they've spoken about the subject (that I am aware of) it seems both Alex and Geddy wanted to experiment quite a bit more. When Neil joined and was apparently heavily into progressive they took off more in that direction than they maybe would have otherwise.

It's hard to fill in the blanks when talking about Rush because they have been so private in their disclosures of even music related comments. I have been a fan since the 70s and some of the songs on Flashback kind of (pleasently) surprised me.

^^^ I think they were also big fans of Yes and Neil liked the style of Bill Bruford, I'm sure I read that some years ago. Anyway that could have been just another factor that helped sway their direction.

Yeah, when I bought my first real Zildjian cymbol it came with a book depicting the set ups of many famous drummers. In it were also very short bio type write ups and under Neil's he listed his early influences as Michael Giles (Giles Giles and Fripp/King Crimson, etc) Phil Collins and Bill Bruford. There might have been others mentioned but those were the ones that stuck out. It was the first time I ever heard of Mr. Giles. He is now one of my favorite drummers.
Again, I think Geddy and Neil were obviously wanting a more progressive direction. I'm not exactly sure about Alex but his later work (La Villa in particular) shows that he picked up on the idea big time at least.

I wonder if anyone here knows what Didacts and Narpets means? I know a didact is a moral teaching but what is /a/ narpet? Is it perhaps a French or French Canadian word?

Any help would be appreciated.
