Wasn't expecting to like it.... a lot of awards shows bore me to tears. But man I enjoyed the heck out of this Grammys and I attentively watched just about the whole thing. Just missed about 20 minutes in between the Rhinestone Cowboy and Nicki Minaj.

As far as the awards aspect goes -- I mean, c'mon, nobody actually believes there's a real artistic hierarchy. Tull beat out AC/DC and Metallica for the metal award when Master of Puppets came out, it's just for fun. At best it's a cultural curio. Some of my favorites won, some didn't, but more importantly it was a pretty admirable and adequate representation of the most consequential music in our culture. Nope it'll never be anywhere near perfect, but when you're putting together Bruce, Macca, Tony Bennett, Glen Campbell, The Beach Boys, The Foo Fighters, Adele, Nicki, Taylor, Bruno, Guetta, The Band Perry, Foster The People, The Civil Wars... it's hard to not be impressed. The Grammys cover a lot of ground.

I really dug Macca's final performance. I didn't watch the show but have been doing re-caps all night.

Just finishing the show (I'm behind everyone else :(). Some thoughts...

After tonight's show I really don't like Nicki Minaj, which is a disappointment for me, because there are so few pure rappers I enjoy and Pink Friday was a good buy for me last year. She just came off as over the top and arrogant, making stupid faces when she lost. And WHAT was the deal with her performance? Are you channeling Madonna's "Like A Prayer" success with the whole religious theme? Stupid.

Adele... what can I say to do that woman justice? She is a phenom, and a great face of the modern music era and gives me hope for the future of popular music. Everyone from Lil' Wayne to Paul McCartney was in awe of her. She's gracious and charming and has a classic, timeless beauty and proves you don't have to be stick thin to be a success. She really has to be the biggest star on the face of the planet right now, especially after tonight. Stellar performance in the wake of her recent surgery. She really defied the odds against her there and proved to the world that she's still on top. I think the artists she was up against shouldn't have even showed. :D

Didn't like Katy Perry's performance at all. :( Rihanna looked really good, and I enjoyed her performance of We Found Love and the subsequent Coldplay performance. Would have preferred to see Princess of China performed as it is on the album but they were going for a sort of hybrid performance that showcased a little bit from each performer along with their collaborative work, so that's alright. Bruno Mars is a babe. I was really wanting that Lupe Fiasco song to win but I'm glad Sooty's boys Jay-Z and Kanye won it. Foo Fighters rocked the house as usual. I swear they never lose their energy and I'm glad they won. I'm not a fan of Sir Paul but he seems like a really happy go lucky guy with a sweet disposition and I like that about him. Taylor Swift's performance was a bit weak and the song was a tad too juvenile for my tastes, and she wasn't dressed for an awards show and looked a little lost at the end. I enjoyed the Glen Campbell performance actually. Tony Bennett and Carrie Underwood were timelessly amazing. Jennifer Hudson did an incredible job with her Whitney tribute, and she is probably the only one who could really do a Whitney song justice. I skipped over a lot of the performances though. Whoops! ;)

Oh... what the HECK was that Mickey Mouse head thing with the lights? I'm serious! Someone please tell me! :wtf:

And in conclusion... all aboard the Adele love train! Choo choo! :grinthumb

Good review of the show. I liked how you weren't afraid to be critical of artist you like. I like Adele but the adoration in general worries me. When we elevate artist there are too many artist like Whitney who crumble under it. I wish all artist had a moderate but very devoted fan base. The whole pedestal that artist get put on just to be dropped later is sad and I'm sure it'll happen to Adele. She's already had wear and tear from her fame. Anyway, that's my what goes up must come down theory. Glad she has that success but I believe it'll be less enjoyable of an artistic experience now IMO. I'm glad Kanye West got the award though not nearly as good of an album as prior. At least it was more of a Kanye album than Jay-Z though. Did the Civil Wars perform because that's the first performance I'd youtube, bar none. :grinthumb Oh and on the Jennifer Hudson tribute, she's talented but I believe Leona Lewis could've done the role justice as well! :grinthumb

To be perfectly honest I just watched the performances I was most interested in (I DVRed most of it and when I finally caught up to the live broadcast I tuned out the stuff I didn't care for) and skipped over some of them Soots so I'm not too sure about the Civil Wars.

I hope you're wrong about Adele's future. I hear Karl Lagerfeld criticized her for being "too fat". It's a shame our society can't look over trivial things like that and appreciate true artistry and talent. She's stunning.

And yeah, I refuse to be bow to an artist I like no matter what even if they were less than impressive. There are even moments in Zeppelin's performance history that are cringeworthy and I won't deny that. Katy didn't perform her best tonight. It wasn't awful, but it just didn't stand out.

This year was definitely the year of more grounded artists like Adele whereas last year was all about the Katys and Gagas. Good show! :grinthumb

I'm happy for and about Adele. I like her but the world is definitely embracing her more than I am. I definitely have a level of enjoyment with her music but I think people are so desperate for a voice to the new generation that they latched on to the first pure singer that reached a universal audience to be that. Seriously I think what I love about the newer generations is it scattered and we didn't have a solid voice. Others seem desperate to have there Beatles or Zeppelin or U2. I think that level is a poison for artist and they either turn into essential arrogant dicks like Jagger, Keith Richards, Bono, David Lee Roth, etc. or get chewed up and spit out like MJ and most recently Brit because people love a fall as much as the rise. Music fans can be great but a large percentage is fickle and even vicious in what we expect out of artist. Adele being on a pedestal so high means music fans are waiting to shake that until she falls. I love top 40 as anyone knows but sometimes I love having my artist at arms grasp to just enjoy artistically and not let the masses have them to shit on them later. I mean how much can Adele experiment with her style without people bitching and moaning now. She'll be stuck making 21 for the rest of her life now.

I don't know about that Soots. I don't think it's that people want to necessarily "latch onto" the biggest pure voice to come along in a good while, but rather it's the simple fact that she IS a simple and pure voice and a refreshing addition to a music market that has turned off so many people in recent years with its flamboyance and arrogance and all around cheaply-manufactured dance tunes and hip-hop dominance. She is a breath of fresh air and is to be appreciated and someone who can easily draw in fans from age 12 to 62. She has that same appeal that Whitney had in the 90's in the Bodyguard era with the voice to match it, and will be emulated for years to come despite if she rises further or falls. It took me awhile to board the Adele train but now that I have I won't be getting off for a long, long time. :grinthumb

I kind of feel that way myself about Adele Soot. I mean I like her also, so please no one get me wrong. But I think she's more latched onto due to her heavy promotion. There are alot of female singers today that have a pure quality.

The one thing I don't get is the Foo Fighters. I like some of their stuff too but it seems as though it has to be expected that they're on every show and have to get awards all the time.

" Hey did anyone remember to call the Foo Fighters? Well get on the ball. We have an award waiting for them and Dave has to play with this year's celebrity!"

That being Sir Paul :heheh:
