This is a short little song but my personal favorite from A Farewell to Kings so far. It has a sweet little intro and I even got Soots to listen to it (well hopefully he did like he said he would )
I can't recall the last time I was looking forward to a new album as I am to the new Rush record - 'Clockwork Angels', which is due out in the spring, mainly because for my money their last album 'Snakes and Arrows' was the best record they ever made, both song-wise and production wise, and they are using the same producer Nick Raskulinecz on the new album that they did on 'Snakes'...so I predict that it will every bit as awesome. They are just such a musical and inventive band, all genuinely brilliant musicians, Neil Peart has no peers as a drummer, and for my money the same could be said of Alex Lifeson's guitar playing, and Geddy's bass and vocals, so all round just the most lights-out talented threesome we have seen probably since ELP and Cream back in the day, the incredible multi-tasking that Rush do on stage has to be seen to be believed, with all the effects pedals/keyboards/percussion they use, in addition to the main intruments, it's mind boggling how technically gifted the are. Also, they are possibly the only band I can think of (at least in my collection) that has never made a single bad record, even their more experimental stuff from around the time of Signals and Grace Under Pressure were flawlessly done and just fascinating musically.
So Riffraff, it does absolutely make sense to start at the beginning with this band, as their music has always been 'progressive' in the best sense of the word, and their sound is always on a journey and has gone through deliberately evolving stages, with the last two records they are going back to a more guitar/drums orientated style that reminds many Rush fans of the early days, so for me it would make no sense at all to randomly dip in and out of their discography, you will IMO appreciate the genius of Rush far more if you listen to them like you would read the chapters of a book, because it's really interesting to hear how they have progressed and improved as musicians, writers, and producers though the years, they are right now at the absolute top of their game, like I said 'Snakes and Arrows' is quite phenomenal, though you have 19 albums to go before you get there if you do start at the beginning, so anyway have a blast with one of the greatest bands in history!!...
Truly epic best track (imo) from 'Snakes and Arrows'...though at one time I actually hated it as the "you can call me faithless" chorus/line is so relentlessly addictive that when I first bought the album I couldn't get it out of my head for weeks.
There is no hard and fast rule I follow either, it depends on what appealed to me at the time and how deep I will go into a bands catalog.
I started with Fly By Night, then got the debut and Caress Of Steel followed by 2112. To be completely honest they all moldered for quite a while in my collection, then I bought "Moving Pictures", backtracked and picked up Hemispheres, Kings and Waves.
From Signals on I have followed them up to the present, like TS, Sox and MP I am really anticipating the new album and will have it in the library while it's still warm from the factory.
[Prologue:]
In the constellation of Cygnus, there lurks a mysterious, invisible force: the black hole
of Cygnus X-1...
Six Stars of the Northern Cross
In mourning for their sister's loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night...
[1]
Invisible to telescopic eye
Infinity, the star that would not die
etc
[2]
I set a course just east of Lyra
And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
Sailed across the Milky Way
On my ship, the 'Rocinante'
Wheeling through the galaxies
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
Headlong into mystery
etc
To be continued...
