Lots of bands/artists have songs that they were disappointed with and have written off in their collection.

Paul McCartney hated "The Long and Winding Road" from Let it Be, and Billy Joel called "We Didn't Start the Fire" a novelty song.

I'm only skimming the surface, but what if you happen to like a certain song and your favorite artist admits publicly that he/she hates that song and says its terrible. Do you say "screw you, I like it goddammit" or do you agree with them?

In a way, I don't know what to think when this happens. It's like you suddenly have to hate it because the writer didn't like it. What's your take on this?

EDIT: Paul didn't like what Phil Spector did to the song, I don't know what his opinion is on the original. Sorry about that.

If I like, I like it...I don't care what they think about it other than to think it's interesting the way they feel.

Well I think there's a difference when you say that something isn't necessarily your favorite thing you've done, and by saying that it was pure crap and fans who like it are nuts (like when Gene Simmons dismissed Music From The Elder and said most people who like it are in mental institutions)

Robert Plant bags on all kinds of Zeppelin stuff, for example....

Me, I don't honestly care what the artist was trying to impart with their music or how they feel about it personally. I listen to what the music tells me, and that's all I need to know.

I like Hearts self titled LP. but so many people have ragged on it (and rightfully so in some ways) the Wilson's now say they hate almost everything from that period.

This reminds me of H.R. Gieger the notoriously brilliant and eccentric artist. He gets involved designing creatures for movies starts off ecstatic and enjoying the experience. By the time the movie is done and wrapped he is dissatisfied with the director, producer, his agent and the creature he created. I personally love his creepy disturbing creations, but I would never want to spend the night in his mansion.:nw:

I like "The Long And Winding Road", the original version on Let It Be, more than the stripped down version.

Blue Oyster Cult one of my all time fave bands released "Mirrors" which they universally don't like. I however really like that album a lot, one of the best produced albums they ever released and strong songs too.

Like others have said I find the artist's/band's opinions interesting, but don't let it influence my likes or dislikes.

I remember Pete Townshend doing an interview in which he said that "Quadrophenia" was the last album that the band really tried on, in terms of a total group effort. Everything after that was junk. I know you have to take a lot of what Pete says with a grain of salt, but I still felt a bit sad. "By Numbers" is my favorite Who album. I wondered what it said about me that I like one of their junk albums more that the ones that the band made a real effort on. But it's like someone once said, "I don't know art but I know what I like".

Def Lep dismisses their first two albums calling them poor. They hardly ever play anything off thier debut album live.

Just because they don't like it doesn't mean you have to do the same.
Pantera are a band who deny ever making albums prior to Cowboys from Hell but the fact is they did.
Def Lep can deny their first couple of records were good but I still love them :D

I'm not heavily visual arts but HR Geiger ranks as a favorite of mine. I love the artwork he did for Brain Salad Surgery. :grinthumb
