I am at odds with a lot of people tagging some excellent European bands with the "Metal" moniker.:nw:

A lot of my favorite New bands are simply hard rock, or at least they sound like that to me, sure the double bass drumkit is there, along some other subtle changes but it is still just hard rock/heavy metal to me.(Not the arcane branches of metal, the doom, power, speed, progressive and symphonic bands are the ones I like.)

I also hate the terms "Alternative, or Indie" both are simply invented by someone to give new fans a brand they could identify with. It's all rock music to me.

It's not dead. There are still tens of thousands of rock bands out there. Thousands of them we will never even get a chance to hear, but as long as they are there and as long as we have this great legacy left behind, rock isnt dead. To make such a blanket generalized statement just means you have already given up and are not even trying to see what's available out there. It's not even that hard to track them down with the internet, but it does take time and effort.

Like someone else mentioned, the money isnt in rock anymore...now its rap, hip hop, pop, etc. So yeah rock might not be mainstream or where all the action is, but there are still plenty of bands doing their own thing.

^^^ Well said and I have to agree. Good rock music is still around but there has been a shift in the market and the more popular stuff gets the airplay and backing as far as I can see.

Doesn't it seem like guitar rock has been on the decline since the late 1980s?
In my eyes guitar rock as we know it formed around 1962-1964 with the blues-based and r&b styles of the Beatles, Yardbirds, Animals, etc. and also the classic rock and roll style of the Beach Boys.
By the late 60s and throughout the 70s rock as at its best. Classic albums like Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin IV, Dark Side Of The Moon, Van Halen, Cat Scratch Fever, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, The Wall, Rumours, Who's Next, Who Are You, etc. (The list goes on and on. I can't think of one album of that quality from the 1990s.)
In the 80s rock was still pretty good as Iron Maiden, Kiss, Motley Crue, Metallica, Slayer, and others maintained the old-school standards of screaming guitars and thrashing drums, plus great songwriting. Of course there was a lot of techno pop in the 80s, but for those who wanted real rock it was there.
It's depressing to see what happened to rock since 1989. Album lengths got too long with the CD format. Quality of music dipped. The best bands were older bands like Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, Kiss, etc. The newer bands were mostly boring: nine inch nails, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, etc.
This decade, the 00s, has seen the end of great rock. Only the old guys like AC/DC and Metallica still no how to make a real rock record. Forgive me but Nickelback and other Creed clones sound very lame to me. The album format is pretty much a thing of the past thanks to digital downloads. I don't see any current bands making any lasting impact, they all suck.
Am I wrong?

Don't give up hope yet. True, there will never again be bands as great as Led Zeppelin or earlier Metallica, but you could see it two ways. I see it as an opportunity to broaden your horizons. True, lots of music is an acquired taste, but. Even if you don't try to broaden your horizons, all hope isn't lost. Metallica's still around, Slash is still around, Ozzy released a new album less than a year ago, Tull's still here, so is Mumford and Sons, a great folk rock band I started listening to. And if you're looking for good modern music, might I reccomend My Morning Jacket. They're this band from Louisville that is one of the truest to rock music today. Found out about them while watching Conan. They kind of remind me a bit of the Grateful Dead.

To make a long story short, my advice for you is to keep digging, because in that pile of trash, you're sure to find a bit of gold somewhere.

Keep on rockin!

Unlike the corporations and record labels would have us believe, rock is alive and well and flourishing, you just have to look around online to see that for yourselves.

The internet and forums/blogs will keep it alive as long as we have power and are connected.:grinthumb
