The time Rush will waste doing this project and then promoting it is time they could be investing into doing a new studio album and at this stage of career, time isn't infinite.

If you are going to be throwing time and energy into the band, Rush ought to be building as much of a catalog as they can before the band breaks up, retires or a key member passes away.

^^I understand that, when I bought "Bursting Out", Jethro Tull's double live album in the late 70's Ian said that he was happy with the diversity on the record, that along with newer material he had a chance to "redo some of the old stuff to bring them up to standard production wise". That is why I think rather than a reissue of a remastered CD they should do a live set, and include it in the next DVD they release after the upcoming tour.

Kills two birds with one stone, and maybe the songs will play better live than in the studio.

Ok, that is reasonable enough.

They aren't necessarily "classic rock" but I remember the band Depeche Mode releasing a studio album called Songs of Faith and Devotion during 1993, I believe.

About 6 months later, they released a live version of the same album with all of the songs recorded live from start to finish and titled it Songs of Faith and Devotion Live.

I know this because I once owned both of them.

Aero makes a good point. Way waste time re-doing an album that's been out a while when your right in the middle of making another album? Guess it depends on how long they want to extend this tour before they want to start this project. Vapor Trials was a "decent" album. I never could tell or notice the difference b/w the sound of this album and others.

btw, wonder why this wasn't news on their site?

^^Can't answer your query Fielding...it seems like worthy in house Rush news to me.

As far as redoing an old album, who knows? If the band feels it was lacking something and want a "do-over" then that is up to them. There is only so much tinkering you can do anyway with the mastertapes, so I would be very surprised if a remix was a quantum jump up in quality.(They better not knock the balance out of whack either, that would make things worse.)

I agree it is their right to redo the album. We all know they have the resources (money/time) to do it and we also know that any number of labels would love to be involved just to make some more money off of Rush product. The average label doesn't care what the product is as long as the band name Rush is on the label somewhere.

Who is going to buy it, though?

People who paid for the album the first time around?

Not necessarily. A segment of their audience is going to be of the opinion that buying the songs once is enough.

People who never bought the album to begin with?

Not necessarily. If they wanted the album, they would have bought it the first time around. After all, they've had eight-plus years to pick it up.

It makes me wonder what the point is. Let's assume Rush follows through with this plan, unlike Boston who planned to do the exact same thing with the Corporate America album, because they honest-to-god believed it should have sold a million copies when it didn't even sell a third of that amount.

Then Rush might as well rewrite or otherwise tweak some of the existing songs or even add a new song or two. If they are going to do it, then at least rearrange the music or lyrics a little, if it is a genuine effort to improve the original product. It just doesn't make sense to do note for note, cut and paste reproductions of the exact same songs. Does it?

I'm genuinely worried about getting on your nerves here LG, since I'm strongly opposed to this sort of idea from a band. I can assure you I am not going out of my way to argue with you or anyone else in the thread. :D

^^The only time you got on my nerves was when you let one of my jokes go by unanswered...otherwise I always enjoy your commentary Aero.(The one where you said you were like a dog chasing cars and I asked "Parked cars as well?"...:D)

I have no intention of buying a remix again, I can tinker with my own gear to get the sound I want without them redoing an entire album.

But as you pointed out there are thousands of fans out there that will buy anything with the name Rush stamped on it.

I never reread that thread, a rarity for me since I usually am pretty OCD-ish about checking for new replies on any thread I leave comments in.

So I missed that one.

But now that we have that out in the open, my reply is:

"Anything but a standard transmission, because I have a tendency to ruin those." :D

(I can't drive a stick and have had many ill-fated attempts trying to learn)
