I think on the whole people here are being very focused on one aspect of screamo, the very death core, cannibal corpse, type screamo. But screamo is a singing style as versatile as rap. In itself screamo isn't actually a genre it's just a vocal technique. You will find it in pop, in punk, in hardcore, in electronica and in just straight out rock.

I mean here's one of my favourite pop screamo bands. TYhey just make fun melodic music with the standard love themes of pop music.

From the conversations I have had with young fans of Screamo bands over the last couple of years I guess part of the attraction is the teenage "Angst" many of them feel, and these bands seem to provide an outlet/comfort for them somehow.

I remember someone wrote a "I Hate My Chemical Romance" thread and wow, the fireworks went from there. The fans of the band would not take any criticism of their heroes no matter how professionally or dispassionately it was expressed. I was really quite surprised by the whole thing, and I am not a Hater of MCR, just don't find them very interesting.

So I guess like Fisha said and Harkat there is some kind of connection screamo bands have with young people that old dinosaurs like myself simply cannot fathom, and not for lack of keeping an open mind either.

I'm still technically a teenage and I still don't get the angsty screaming thing. I didn't get it when I was a few years younger either. Maybe I'm just that weird kid that turned to "Bat Out Of Hell" for my teenage angst.

Well clearly you underrated just how friggin' insane those teenage MCR fans are, LG. Those fans are actually the reason I had to take a couple years off from MCR before I could listen to them again.

Not a fan of screamo by any means, but just because lyrics depict them as not caring about anything does not mean they do not appreciate fans. Still think that genre for the most part sucks.

Cannibal Cropse is death metal. Huge difference between Screamo and death metal. There is also a huge difference between screaming, pig squeals, and growls as well.

When the lead singer of The Used started out, he had a bucket to throw up in during concerts, because he screamed to the point of making himself physically sick.

Then a few years ago he had to have surgery to save his vocal chords, and was told to either change his singing style or lose his voice. I know a little sacrifice for your art/calling is expected but that is a little too much for me to grasp.

Learn how to sing, use the screams to punctuate a song or tastefully and I have no problem with them, like many great rock/metal artists have done in live concerts for decades.

I really,really thought the screamo thing was a joke,so i went onto YouTube and checked it out.Dire,absolute tripe,it is some kinda' teenage joke,isn't it?.Is there anybody here on the Classic Rock Forum who would look forward to a screamo album coming out,then actually go and buy it and sit down and listen to it??

Kuaizi, Mikael Akerfeldt is the exception in that genre, I don't mind Opeth but that is where it ends for me in the Death Metal arena.

I'm glad LG brought up The Used because that's a band I love that actually amongst my top twenty bands. I didn't like screaming at all because that's all there was in it and it had no balance. A lot of metal is like that for me. For me, what I love is a hard-soft-hard-soft type melody and after hearing The Used I think they perfected it. They had some songs that were a full out assault but then they'd balance that out with a pure ballad that had more beauty than any regular rock bands ballads could carry. I don't see it as a young people thing. I haven't lost that youthful rush I get from music. Music is energy one way or another. As far as depressing lyrics I don't find them depressing. When an artist sings passionately about life it's a catharsis that is positive rather than negative. I don't get the "All music has to be full of good times and sunshine" stuff. I thought that's what pop was for! I've known to many stubborn people who hold shit inside or use other means such as alcohol or drugs to release vibes. I use the beauty of music.

I know about the lead singers Bert's episodes on stage, though I never saw it and I've seen them live twice. It's sick (no sicker than a lot of rock antics though, Ozzy, Iggy Pop, etc.) but it's own way shows the singers passion at what he does. Plus, now he's adapted from his mistakes and still puts out great music even with his limitations.

So here's a sample of The Used to show that they have a good amount of balance:

So yes Cream'd, a person can enjoy Classic Rock listener can still keep listening to as much music as makes him happy. I LOVE this stuff and you haven't seen me throwing any Classic Rock singers/acts under the bus in these threads. I think threads like these are waste and would rather keep discovering new stuff. I really don't understand why that's a favorite question around here. This forum is what each person makes it so if you want something to be more dominant here then feel free to bump away or create an abundance of Classic Rock band threads!

Choosing "Bat..." over those other bands was a good choice Cosmic.

Indeed, the MCR thread was an eye-opener for sure, you would think the fans were all dating the band members the way they carried on, especially the lead singer. I am positive that is why certain Haters love picking on MCR, just to get the frenzied reaction of the fanboys and girls that follows.

It's all too funny for me to take seriously, I sure hope these kids grow out of that phase when they get a little older, and start listening to better music, that couldn't hurt at all.

A no brainer here. Needs no discussion for me. RAP and HIP HOP. Good night. I could take Zamfir playing the Bavarian cheese whistle right in my ear for 7 days straight before i would listen to rap. I kicked a friends friends stereo in because we had listened to this crap over and over on a road trip. He would not take the crap off at the request of all of us...so...crack! Don't worry he was a ####. And i did not pay for a new stereo. The judge " it was Rap ? Case dismissed "
