Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Who, The Ramones, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Greatful Dead, every single Glam Metal band.

That is quite a list, including Pink Floyd in your next post.

I will agree with the Sex Pistols from your list, most of the others they have stood the test of time so far. Do people seem to treat them with a reverence beyond what they deserve? Most likely that is true enough, it has to do with a sentimental attachment being part of the explosion of great rock music my generation grew up with.(As far as the legendary late 60's early 70's bands are concerned.)

I can see how young anarchist rebels with a cause would have issues with these bands, but I will always love their music, whether it's overrated, underrated or ignored by everyone else.:grinthumb

^^I cannot deny the Sex Pistols importance MP, but I just don't like their music at all and never have.

The Mighty Clash will always be my favorite Punk era band, and they proved you can grow beyond just protest/anti-authority/anarchist punk music and created one of the best albums ever recorded.:D

I don't really get Led Zeppelin. I've tried listening to them and, beside a few songs, I don't really understand why people love them so much. But that's something I'll correct with time, I guess I'll get to like them and appreciate them some day.

^^It goes beyond just music Syd, over time bands assume a legendary status whether deserved or not. Led Zeppelin was the pinnacle of rock music for over 5 years, and influenced so many bands that came after they do deserve some praise.

When it comes to any new band, I have a simple rule, I listen to an album at least 3 times before I make any kind of judgement, in some cases up to 6 times. Many of my favorite recordings took time to get into. Of course there are exceptions some albums that I played once and that was it for me, very rare but it did happen and I am usually very patient when it comes to music.

Yeah. I've tried being patient with Led Zeppelin. 'Staiway To Heaven' is one of my favourite songs. But I heard the first album complete a few times and it hasn't done anything to me yet. But I find them very talented, even if I don't really like it that much. Maybe it's what they represent what made them great. So I'll listen to them more, I know I'll get to love them, maybe it's just a matter of time. Because one of my favourite albums ever (The Stone Roses) i had to listen to it like 10 times to get to like it (i heard everysong and they all just seemed the same to me).

And I'd like to add The Sex Pistols. I also like a few of their songs, but in this case they only did like one LP and I understand the fuzz they generated, but I don't really see that coming to music. It's more good marketing than anything else in this case.

^^Yes that is one reason I don't like the Sex Pistols, one album no matter how influential is not enough to get a legendary rating in my books, plus I don't think they are very good musicians. It was as much about the times they were living in and the groundswell of dissatisfaction by all young people across the world with the state of things, punk music become their voice for a few years.

Malcolm McLaren?...I think that's his name is the manager who created the Sex Pistols and the rest is history.

I'm with both of you on this one!

It seems, though, bands that are generally associated with a certain image or stereotype, the ones like the Clash that are overrated by that stereotype.. You get the "fanboys" that have heard Train in Vain, London Calling, and White Riot only, and will fight to the death that The Clash is the greatest band in the world, ever.. I love the band and they are definitely, very, very high on my list, but they aren't as great as the "fanboys" say.. I wouldn't fight to the death, but they are a damn good band, that I think are underrated by the ones outside of the stereotype.. Not many people realize their more than anarchy and powerchords..

I think they get lumped with the pistols too often:D

^ I like The Clash, but agree, they aren't the greatest of greatest. Some of their songs lose me in the political mumbo jumbo. The meaning of the songs go over most people's head, including mine, at times to be honest. I'm not dumb, I understand some of it. But like the powerchords and some of the lyrics that I can understand. I guess I'm not hardcore fan. But hey, at one point in time, I didn't like The Clash at all.
