Re: Atomic Rooster

In Hearing Of... is more funky, groovy than the hard hitting Death Walks Behind You. DKW, check it out if you haven't already.

Re: Atomic Rooster

A fan of the 'Roosters for many a year, i even have "Headline News" in my collection. Here is a rather "live" version of the Bromide song...

Re: Atomic Rooster

I listened to the whole first half of this thread! I love the vocalist! He has a lot of character and can go from gritty rock vocals to a more metal vocal. I also like some of the unique music directions of the band. What I didn't like was the overuse of organ. I don't get how people could hear this instrument in more than small doses. I love certain bands who use it like The Doors but it's grating after a while. Anyway, a good find for a classic rock band and a little classic rock education for the new music guy! :grinthumb

Wow! I forgot I was in this thread before but honestly after listening to all of "Death Walks Behind You" surprisingly or not my criticisms and compliments fall in the same place! This album was way too chock full of organ for me but what's changed for me is the use of piano itself I didn't get to here in this thread! The songs that have the nice piano touches are my favorites. The album was too jammy for me at times! just not my thing when I feel like a jams just there for jams sake. Oh, and I still dig the vocalist! :grinthumb Here are my favorite tracks:

Death Walks Behind You
(the album grabbed me from the start with the creepy piano intro! Brilliant! The rest of the song is a great groove and the best vocal on the album IMO! Very Morrison)

Nobody Else
(just a nice metropolitan like piano track, a nice break in the album and his mellow vocal is equally impressive)

Gershatzer
(once the typical organ jam wore off this turned into a great track, when the actual piano came in with it's vaudeville vibe things got interesting, the piano melody at 2:00 min. in that follows is gorgeous and highlights the song for me. Then the song shows an industrial vibe before it existed! Now it's like lasers and I don't like that part but it picks up and sounds like a crazy circus! The beat that the drums make at about 5 min. in is tight but goes on too long and the song finishes up in predictable fashion. Cool song but I would've edited it a bit to make it great!)

Oh and closing the album cover is really cool! I like William Blake and when I read it was from a work of his I thought that was even greater! :grinthumb

Soot, you're really going out of your "comfort zone" the last couple of days.:grinthumb

Great reviews of the songs you posted.

If you get some spare time, take a listen to In Hearing Of... I prefer it to Death Walks Behind You. Not quite as heavy and "over the top" as it's predecesor. More of a groove and a funky/soul direction on this album that works IMO. The first side is excellent with the second not quite as good. Vincet's Crane's keyboards are real show here as the guitar is "turned down" for this album. More piano on this album also. Two of the best albums from Atomic Rooster IMO.

Re: Atomic Rooster

Thanks Joe! My comfort zone is more of a time zone! :heheh: All my favorite artist are also coming out with new albums that it's hard to go back in time but I've had some time this week until my family drops off the new Kanye album I had them pick up. :heheh: Plus, your 60's and 70's album directories were a perfect tool at the perfect time! :grinthumb

I'll definitely check that album out within the week especially since you describe the traits I like! :grinthumb

I now what you mean Soot. I have a hard time going out of my comfort zone as well. With that being said I'm going to give Arcade Fire's Funeral another listen today. I thought In Hearing Of... would be more up your alley.

Re: Atomic Rooster

Soot I love the sound of the Hammond Organ but Tracey isn't a fan. I have a stack of bands in my collection that lean heavily on the organ, so you can imagine I have to time the air play just right or reach for the headphones.

LG do you think this is a band who's records seem to sound better as the years go by ?

@ Sox-I feel bad I didn't respond to you the first time! I must have missed your response. That's a funny story though! Tracy says she has to do the same thing when she plays Tori Amos if I remember right! :heheh: I don't completely hate the organ. After all I love The Doors but I don't think I could listen to a multitude of bands like that consecutively! :D

@joe-I listened to

In Hearing Of....

1726715714821.jpeg

and liked it a little better! The highlight for me is the ones that were more piano focused like:

Decision/Indecision

I love the piano melody to that one and the lyrics and vocals are classic but could fit into todays conventions as well IMO. Instrumentals like A Spoonful of Bromide leave me on the other side of the fence musically though. I mean I get the feeling of energy but after a point I go from "Yeah!" to "Ummm yeah, o.k.!" I'd say about the 3 minute mark on that one it was like jam time over for me! lol We both seem to like "Black Snake" though which is a slow, moody groove! :grinthumb

I'm loving these endless albums to discover! :grinthumb

Re: Atomic Rooster

Soot, I thought you might like it a little better. Not quite as heavy/fast as Death Walks Behind You. The bands next release after In Hearing Of..., Made In England features a new lineup yet again with keyboardist Vincent Crane being the mainstay of the band. Vocalist Chris Farlowe, a great blues vox in his own right, IMO doesn't really fit in with the style with Crane's keyboards. A great album, but doesn't match up tp to Death walks Behind You and In Hearing Of...

Re: Atomic Rooster

It's hard to describe Joe but I have nothing against heavy but heavy to me is most enjoyable not in the jamming realm but rather with the soft/loud/soft style of many 90's bands or with the 2,000's bands that have that plus a pop sensibility and great hooks. One of my favorite heavy bands or bands period is The Used which fall under the screamo category. :grinthumb
