Gregg Allman's new liver

I was reading about this just this morning. Hadn't seen it in her, so I thought I'd share.

I love the Allman's and their music, but honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Glad he get's to live another day, but there are lots of people waiting for livers that didn't put theirs throught the paces the way he did.

It seems a little odd to me that just because a person is famous, they're allowed to receive spare parts before people who DIDN'T destroy their organs, and actually have diseases that have been battled, and are ready to turn over a new leaf.

I mean it's nice that he gets to survive, but someone else could have used it.

That is the power of celebrity and money I'm afraid Lady. I do agree with your point there are many deserving people that have lived normal lives and should Not be shoved back in the line just because someone more famous needs that organ transplant.

Having got that off my chest, I can't find it in myself to wish Gregg any ill will, it's not his fault the system caters to the upper class, and I suppose I would jump the queue myself if it meant life or death if I was in his place.

You are never the same after a transplant you have to take immunological suppressant drugs for the rest of your life to stop your body from rejecting the organ, which does have complications of it's own.

Moral of the story, live life in moderation and you don't need replacement parts, unless the original factory bits and pieces were flawed somehow.

I agree with LG here. The system is completely ruined, but the musicians aren't to blame and I'm sure everyone here if they were in Gregg's position would gladly accept that liver.

But yes, these stories are the reason I don't get out and get drunk every weekend. Moderation is the key to a long life.

And what's worse is he was already sick with cancer as well. Maybe he didnt know it, but it was something a thorough exam would have uncovered.

I don't begrudge Allman, I wouldn't turn a needed organ down either. It's the system that needs fixing. If nothing else, hopefully the celebrity transplant preference at least draws more attention to the need for donor organs.

IMHO, I don't give a rats ass if they lived reckless life styles or not, if they need a transplant and they go on the national recipient list, they should get the transplant when it is available.

I have a neice who is on the national recipient list, and believe it or not, money plays no part in who gets what. It is determined by the national donators register and whether or not the recipient and donator actually match up. Plus there are other things to consider, like the transport time for the organ and if the recipient is in good enough health at the time the donation becomes available.


I am amazed and glad that medical technology is able to save lives with organ donations. I know there is a black market for this, but it doesn't work that way in the USA. It is done by a registry!
