which two albums are the duds?? Not that I think everything they did was golden, I just want to know which two you don't like.

The way I see it... Petty had his new wave rock thing for a decade & a half. Then circa Full Moon Fever he switched over to more of a folkish thing. And he did that for a couple of decades almost, and then Mudcrutch came along, pointing his work in a much more groovey, sort of Allman Brothers-esque direction. I'm wondering if he's going to stick with it for a couple decades.

I really think the Heartbreakers are getting better and better..

I agree with this. Petty & Heartbreakers keep putting out albums that their hardcore fans really-really enjoy...and meanwhile, they're picking up new fans along the way, with their new music, and not just the classics.

To me - Tom Petty & Heartbreakers are rock royalty. They're are up there with The Rolling Stone, The Who, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd - and that's high praise from me.

And you know what is the best part of Tom Petty & Heartbreakers?
they show no sign of slowing down!

I disagree about the course of things.. I already described that in my OP though

as for the two albums.. The Last DJ and Let Me Up I've Had Enough... those two don't sit right with me, I don't like the majority of the songs on them, and I feel that the band had done, does, and will do much better.. definitely not bad numbers though.. two out of all the others definitely isn't bad

I actually can respect them more than Floyd, Zeppelin, Stones, The Who and not just because I like their tunes better... of course that is the main reason, but I don't think any of those bands evolved as much, Daltrey and Townsend are close in the improvement and evolving, but I don't think the band as a whole changed or improved as much.. they both started at very, very good points though.. Agreed about the slowing down part though

Mmm... I'd love to hear how you would outline it yourself, big fan that you are. I see your OP but all you did was state the facts about what was released when. I could imagine maybe adding a synthy middle period into the mix and there was much 'rock' about their 90s output, but it was definetly more of an organic and folksier mentality.

This post confused me a little, but I'll try to answer what I think you're asking

They started out with a very swampy and bluesy sound.. also had a very 60s like influence, I think they almost started out folkier than they ended up because of the heavy Byrds influence on the early HB's, they had that sound for a while, but it changed up a bit with each album, in the 80s they got into a slower sound, this was epitomized by Southern Accents IMO, then later in the 80s Full Moon Fever era, I don't think it got folky at all.. the songs were very layered and a lot of studio work went into.. definitely not any more so than the first album.. it didn't have some of the swampiness or blues sound that the early albums had.. through the ninetees I think Petty's writing was more mellow, but also encompassed a hard rock influence.. Mike Campbell also had a lot to do with the hard rock in the albums during that period, by Highway Companions they got back into their roots I think, it sounded like it had simpler writing, then mudcrutch which took them back to a very swampy sound, like the original mudcrutch sounds, very southern and bluesy, and now here we are with Mojo... I hope that answered what you were asking.. and all in my opiinion of course

A video was released for "Don't Pull Me Over".. it was done by Petty's son and his crew.. Pretty cool video, something fairly basic with quite a bit of flair, and I think it's pretty cool that he digs his dad's music like it seems he does.. Also, just going by this, I get the feeling that he has his head on pretty straight... which isn't the case with a lot of celebrity/famous person/musician/pop culture star children, as seen on this thing called..reality TV..

I made this clip in my studio in Venice, CA with some pals one fine day a few months ago.

For me it was a cool opportunity to collaborate with one of my favorite visual artists, the LA-based Patrick Roberts, who created all of the collage and set elements.

It was also an opportunity to support my dad's consistent output of really great music.

Thirty some odd years into living in a family that makes music I still feel so lucky and excited to be one of the first to hear a new record.

This song "Don't Pull Me Over" is a special one on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' latest blues album, Mojo.

On first listen it is sort of the "weird track" similar to the anomalies "Don't Come Around Here No More" or "You Don't Know How It Feels". It doesn't fit on the record but in a way it is the stand out moment on the record. It is the comic relief. And the first time you hear the entire record it makes a big impression.

In his reclusive way my pop did not want to do any traditional promotion for Mojo. But with some nepotism and coaxing I was allowed to produce this strange and humble offering.

So trip out and have a giggle and dig that guitar solo. I really hope you enjoy this music video for "Don't Pull Me Over".
