Recalling my first Sony Walkman on this one..1980- 1981?
The days of mixtapes and mod revival.
As i worked in a dreadful factory job..Chuck C120 tapes kept me sane.
Bobby Soxer is class...as is this!

Forget about playing with My Ding A Ling. I like that story Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones recounts of trying to see Chuck backstage in his dressing room at the Finsbury Park Astoria (The Rainbow in the 1970s) on some unspecified date and pushing his way through his female fan's and being told by Chucks road manager that you can't see Chuck at the moment as he's currently pre-occupied with cooking his supper??.

Bill's comment was 'Strange guy??'

And..Chuck carried a small case with him..the lolly in crisp notes had to be in it- before stepping on stage.
The Alan Freed credit on his first single tee'd him off big time .
He used to relay a story about going into Woolworths and buying a newly released Maybelline for his Mother- when he saw names other than his own..it scarred him.

I like the scene in the film/dvd of The London Rock & Roll Show filmed at the old Wembley stadium in London in August 1972 when Chuck toped the bill over Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis & Bo Diddley anyway Chuck closed the show and because the gig was running late they cut the power to Chucks amps at the 11:00pm curfew leaving Chuck looking high & dry and bemused looking at his silent electric guitar??. Anyway they put the power back on and Chuck finished his set but in a minor interview section at the end of the film that was filmed quite soon after the gig Chuck says that they cut the power just as he was reaching a climax and you know what it feels like when you don't reach your climax!!. lol ha ha ha...

I had the pleasure of seeing Chuck on two separate occasions, the first at an Ice Stadium with an ex-squeeze - there was a huge punch up with the security staff...Chuck remarked "that the place was lovely" - as he unplugged his Gibson and backed off stage, ( his trademark.)
Second time was with a 6 month pregnant Wife...top notch performance and stood and spoke with fans and signed albums and photos for almost an hour.
We had booked at a nearby Indian Restaurant.. and lo and behold Chuck and the band plonk right bedside us.
Knowing Mr. Charles Anderson can be 'tetchy'.. i summoned the waiter and ordered a round of drinks for their table.
Funnily enough he expressed his appreciation of not pestering him.. as we prepared to leave( we had just danced on stage with him and his Daughter during 'School Days' at his request.
He rushed to a napkin and pen to write down, what i quipped:
"Chuck, you have pumped up the tyres, now I'm going home to ride the bike".
Chuck, here with Bobby Keyes, Steve Jordan and Chuck Leavell.
Note a nervous Keith ( ensuring none of those unplaced jazz keys are thrown in.)

People were wondering if both Mick & Keith would put in an appearance at Chucks funeral which they both didn't which some thought was a missed opportunity especially for Keith who plundered the Chuck Berry song book and Chuck's guitar licks??.

Bit of a strange one but I saw a Chuck Berry gig advertised in a East end back street pub about 6 or 7 years ago and thought "No way could that be thee CHUCK BERRY?." The advert said CHUCK BERRY but I don't know maybe it was a genuine gig by the man himself on a low key visit to London?.

Did you see him? How lucky it would be if you really see the real him that day.
