ZZ Top... Hard Rock?

some of me says as @Sweaty but I also would call them Southern Rock or Blues Rock............

No ZZ Top are not hard rock. They are a southern rock, blues rock, rock band. But that doesn't mean they can't boogie in a hard way

Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden Ozzy and Motorhead are heavy metal.

Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Uriah Heep are hard rock.

ZZ Top is blues rock

I guess that's just a difference in opinion. In my book, to be heavy metal is heavy, distorted guitars, mosh pits, and usually growling or screaming vocals. I would consider maybe Tool to be the "least heavy" heavy metal band.

But I guess that's not the point of this thread...

Growling or screaming vocals alone do not make someone metal. Metal can have clean vocals you know.

Tbh the whole debating over labels is rather ludicrous.

Wow. Really? These two bands are the definition of hard rock.

ZZ Top definitely had hard rock tracks from their first release to 'Deguello'. After that, at least their next two releases the sound was a MOR/AOR synthy blues based rock catering to the MTV audience.
