Since a few other people are going over the required '5' - and I've never in living memory been capable of limiting myself to just 5 of anything, then here's the 10 who would get in my own Hall of Fame....

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Pearl Jam
Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits
Van Morrison
Joni Mitchell
Billy Joel
Radiohead
Bob Dylan
Steely Dan

That's a tough question. Thus far I don't have five favorite artists, I have two favorite artists. But I'll fill in the gaps the best I can.

#1 -- Neil Young, the only artist with as many tectonic shifts as me. Neil's a part of who I am, he's so far ahead that you can add up all the other artists and they still wouldn't match him.

#2 -- Tom Petty, the perfect meeting point between my love for rock and my taste for pop.

#3 -- Taylor Swift, she's got about forty years yet to catch up with the all-stars. But so far she represents the music I grew up with, from Petty and Neil, more than any of the rock bands today -- who tend to err either too much on the impressionistic side, or too much on the macho side.

#4 -- Pink Floyd, music that pierces the heart of the darker sentiments. Roger Waters' look at humanity has been a lasting benchmark for me.

#5 -- The Doors, one of music history's most unique acts. Bounding, heavy songs with no bar chords, insane organ solos, brooding lyrics, and catchy frickin' melodies.

Which version of the Mac ?

That is a band that went through so many distinct periods.

Changes on a regular basis but Bob Dylan would/will always be #1.
Bob Dylan.
The Beatles.
Neil Young.
The Moody Blues.
The Pentangle.

Wow a fan of Pentangle. How about Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span.

Fans of this type of music should follow the Oil of Dog Corner on my web site. The Oil of Dog was a radio show hosted by Gary Storm in the 80's and he played the most diverse and fascinating sets of music, comedy and even poetry. Amazing that this was on commercial radio as you can't even find such programming today on public radio. I have been uploading clips of that show and will continue to do so.

Hi Javed Jafri.
I have a few Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span albums. The only Fairport Convention album I got into in any way was Full House.
Never seem to hear these guys getting a shout out.
