I shaped my ability to play chords around the structures of Alex Lifeson and Edward Van Halen. EVH is, actually, a highly underrated RHYTHM guitar player who came up with some simple yet great combinations... Listen to the intro to 5150, Summer Nights, Little Guitars (not the acoustic portion, although that's greatness as well). Lifeson blew me away on songs like Freewill and, later, Distant Early Warning so I had to learn to play like that. Later, I picked up on Chris DeGarmo's technique (Queensryche) thanks to his work on Empire, Operation:Mindcrime. As for solos, I tend to focus very heavily on melody... Kee Marcelo (Europe) was a profound inspiration on me for that. I also heard a bit of that with guys like Erik Turner, Nuno Bettencourt and Paul Gilbert. I use an Ibanez on stage but all my recordings are on Fender Strats with Seymour Duncan humbuckers. I wish I had a Soldano rectifier or a Mesa Boogie Colesium head to mess around with (ever listen to Sykes' work with Whitesnake in '87 or his Blue Murder release? That tone is insanely good). But, alas I normally rely on great Boss pedals through Fender 212 tube amps. If you can imagine what all that sounds like put together, that tends to be my style.
