Not that it matters, because it's the music, the band and the stage
show that grabbed us fans, but I'm curious what the peanut gallery
here thinks about Van Halen...

If you were to define the band by a decade, something that we can
do with many bands that span across multiple decades, how would
you categorize these guys?

70's Band - 2 albums
80's Band - 6 albums
90's Band - 3 albums

I realize that there's no "need" to define their career by a particular
decade, I'm just looking for some banter, thoughts and opinions.

The 70s. I still think their first three albums are the best of the bunch, and they were in their groupie shagging, stage blazing, no brown M&Ms prime. It was all great music and good times. The 80s is when it started to go sour (IMO).

Just a hunch, but I'm guessing that if your 45 or older, your going to pick the 70's. :D But to me.. Van Halen hit the rock stations with the force of a hurricane. There really wasn't any new bands that compared to them and the stuff they were putting out just got better.. But I was dissapointed with the Sammy albums even though they were good..

I usually think of them as a 70's band even though on paper they were bigger and did more in the 80's.

I associate them with the 80's...the same way that I associate Led Zeppelin with the 70's even though they started in the 60's.
