Freddie Mercury - uniquely flexible voice that excellent can convey all range of emotions - from gentle sadness to venomous hatred and contempt. He's the genius of vocals.
Klaus Meine - sonorous and heartfelt voice, he is equally excellent sounds and in lyrical ballads and hard rock songs.
Ronnie James Dio - powerful, resonant voice. However, the power of his voice in no way overshadowed expression and impact on the feelings of the audience. Real thunder.
Jorn Lande - incredible strength, husky vocals, which are subject to a variety of styles - from AOR to power metal. Starting as a double by David Coverdale, later Jorn have found his own recognizable style, and I think, he's many exceeded the "teacher".
Mark (Marcie) Free - a singer, that perfectly combines the power of his voice and lyricism. In live perfomances he's sounds great. In my opinion - the best voice in melodic rock. It's a pity that he (now-she) have to experience so many problems in life .- ((

P.S. Add to this five:
Danny Bowes - vocalist of the "Thunder", perfectly combining style of Paul Rodgers and his own personality. He's easily manages his voice (as it should be a blues-rock singer) and great sounds "live". Very powerful singer.

Because they all have very powerful voices that are able to cover a wide range
both low and high and everything in between , aggressive or soothing or anything else they might want to convey, all of it with convection and real feeling and emotion .

And as a side bar ....Ian Gillan and Ozzy in their early years. Why ? Because they are Godz !!

Jimmy Barnes - Great powerful range, by far the best vocalist I`ve ever heard live and I`ve seen a few.

Lou Gramm - Wonderfully distinctive voice. Brilliant

Steve Perry - Great sound, probably peaked around Escape and went raspy around Frontiers but still majestic.

Ronnie James Dio - Probably the best ever metal singer, fantastic

Ann Wilson - Greatest ever female rock singer

So many to choose from...

Geoff Tate - Incredible range, can sing freakishly high without sounding like a
member of a boy band

Ian Gillan - Awesome. Can sing, can scream, but does it without giving the
listener a headache. Very good live, at least in his early years.

Freddie Mercury - Queen songs for me are hit and miss, but on every track
Freddie is outstanding. One of the best ever.

Mike Patton - After he dropped the slightly whiny, nasal sound on "The Real
Thing", Mike showed what he could do on the subsequent FNM
albums. Like the others in the list, has great range and can
scream with the best of them. Influenced a whole new genre
of singers.

Ann Wilson - Ann simply kills. Unmatched power and range, can sing sensual
to angry and it all sounds great. Best rock female vocalist
ever, arguably best rock singer period. Live performance every
bit is good as in the studio.

A combination of power metal vocalist and heavy metal with some post-hardcore thrown in. All pretty much for the same reason, they've got range, and they sound great. Not a whole lot of specific reasons for each.

Matt Smith
Zaher Zorgati
Bruce Dickinson
Brandon Bolmer
James LaBrie (I know his range can be a little iffy, but he's still a great singer nonetheless)

1. LAYNE STALEY will always be the best to me, his voice is so raw and gripping it speaks to your soul. He can go from those raunchy wails to the deep groaning. Layne is so in your face yet modestly haunting at the same time.
2. SERJ TANKIAN, most of the reason I like him so much is that his voice is so unique, unpredictable and peculiar.
3. STEVIE NICKS (Fleetwood Mac days more specifically), whenever she sings it's so soothing and relaxing to me it's like a lullaby. hah, her voice to me is hard to explain.
4. AXL ROSE, so many different voices in one man, it's so dirty and powerful.
5. BILLY CORGAN, his voice is so recognizable and weird. Yes. That's all I have to say. That mushroom capped feller is weird and I dig it.

Jim Morrison - Distinctive, cold voice that never seemed to match up to his face. Weird in the bestest way :)
